On Wednesday May 29, 2024, 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. ET, in honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) Heritage Month 2024, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) invites you to join an X chat to discuss how social determinants of health (SDOH) impact the wellbeing of AA and NHPI communities, the role of data disaggregation in addressing SDOH, and the efforts of our partners advancing health equity for AAs and NHPIs.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month
Stroke is a leading cause of death for Americans and the risk of a having a first stroke is twice as high for non-Hispanic Black adults as for white adults. However, it can be prevented and treated.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (DHDSP) provides public education about the basics of stroke. Their Stroke Communications Kit contains resources and downloadable materials to help spread information about stroke signs and symptoms, preventative measures, stroke treatment, and other related topics.

Disparities in Health Care in Medicare Advantage by Race, Ethnicity, and Sex
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Office of Minority Health (CMS OMH) released the tenth edition of the Disparities in Health Care in Medicare Advantage by Race, Ethnicity, and Sex Report. This 2024 report provides a summary of the quality of health care received by people enrolled in Medicare Advantage across the United States, focusing on differences in patient experience and clinical care quality based on race, ethnicity, and sex in 2023.
The 2024 report highlights a range of aspects regarding the quality of patient care. It includes seven measures of patient experience from the Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plan Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Provider and Systems survey stratified by race and ethnicity, sex, and the combination of race and ethnicity within sex to highlight areas where disparities exist.

The aim of this guide is to provide food banks and food pantries with ideas to help meet the cultural needs of neighbors within the charitable food system.

Reducing Stroke Risk in African American Men
This study, sponsored by Case Western Reserve University in collaboration with the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), will evaluate the effectiveness of a nurse-led, person-centered intervention to help reverse the high morbidity of African American men due to stroke-related diseases. This study will take place in Cleveland, Ohio.
Exercise Primed Stroke Rehabilitation
This study, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Research and Development, will examine the 'priming' effect of aerobic exercise on a motor rehabilitation intervention for chronic stroke survivors. This study will take place in Charleston, South Carolina.

NINR invites letters of interest for their first Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Summer Research Institute for early and mid-career investigators interested in learning about the principles of high-quality SDOH research.

Telehealth Implementation Bootcamp 2024
The University of Mississippi Medical Center’s HRSA Telehealth Center of Excellence will host the Telehealth Implementation Bootcamp. Healthcare organizations and professionals will participate in an ongoing program with support, technical assistance, and virtual education through the spring of 2025.
Deadline for application is June 15.
