Arab American Heritage Month
April is Arab American Heritage Month, an annual observance that recognizes the contributions of Arab Americans and Arabic-speaking Americans to the United States. In the 2020 Census, more than 3.5 million people reported Middle Eastern or North African descent. This year’s theme, “Celebrating Arab American Resilience and Diversity,” honors the diverse backgrounds and vibrant traditions of Arab American culture.

Community Level Innovations for Improving Health Outcomes
Grant from the HHS Office of Minority Health for community-level innovations that demonstrate reducing barriers related to social determinants of health can increase the use of preventive health services and make progress toward leading health indicator targets. Deadline is May 15.
State Health Services and Financing
Cooperative agreement from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to support the Organizations of State and Local Officials Program. This agreement will fund a national level organization with an in-depth understanding of, and experience with, providing technical assistance and support to State Medicaid Directors and other health care payment officials to assist states in leveraging HRSA programs and collaborating with Medicaid to improve access to quality health care for high need communities. Deadline is May 23.
Advancing Diversity in Aging Research through Undergraduate Education
Grant from the NIH to support the development and implementation of research education programs for undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. Deadline is May 25.

CDC’s 2022 School Health Profiles
The School Health Profiles from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is a system of surveys assessing school health policies and practices in states, school districts, territories, and tribes. The 2022 results are now available through an interactive tool that uses tables and maps to display data on health education, health services, physical education and activity, school nutrition, safe and supportive environments, and more.

Advisory: Evidence-Based, Whole Person Care of Pregnant People Who Have Opioid Use Disorder
Opioid use during pregnancy increases the risk of neonatal abstinence syndrome and has been associated with other adverse health effects, including poor fetal growth, preterm birth, stillbirth, and specific birth defects. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Advisory outlines how healthcare providers can take an active role in supporting the health of pregnant individuals who have opioid use disorder and their babies.

Enhancing Rural Health Via Cardiovascular Telehealth for Rural Patients Implementation
This study, sponsored by Wake Forest University Health Sciences in collaboration with the Health Resources and Services Administration, will evaluate the implementation of a cardiovascular telehealth platform connecting experts from a tertiary care center with an emergency medical system and a community health clinic to improve cardiovascular care in a rural community. This study will take place in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Groceries for Black Residents of Boston to Stop Hypertension Among Adults with Treated Hypertension
This study, sponsored by the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in collaboration with the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, will test the effects of a home-delivered DASH-patterned grocery intervention on blood pressure in Black adults actively treated for hypertension living in food deserts. This study will take place in Boston, Massachusetts.

The Advancing Indigenous People in STEM A.T. Anderson Memorial Scholarship Program supports undergraduate students studying medical sciences, mathematics, nursing, technology, and other subjects. Deadline for application is April 30.
National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program
The Loan Repayment Program from the HRSA National Health Service Corps (NHSC) offers programs in three areas that can repay part or all of the school loan debt for working health professionals: NHSC Substance Use Disorder Workforce, NHSC Rural Community, or NHSC Students to Service loan repayment program. Deadline for application is May 9.

In recognition of Arab American Heritage Month, the OMH Knowledge Center is highlighting the journal article Attitudes Toward Depression in Arab American Muslims: A Pilot Study from The Primary Care Companion for CNS Disorders. This pilot study examines the role religion plays in Arab Americans’ attitudes toward mental illness. This study concludes that mental health advocacy in the Arab American community should leverage cultural and religious beliefs to complement and support evidence-based practices.
