FYI: Weekly Health Resources

April 11-17 is Black Maternal Health Week

April 11-17 is Black Maternal Health Week

In 2021, maternal mortality disproportionately impacted Black women with a mortality rate of 69.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, 2.6 times the mortality rate of non-Hispanic White women.

Black Maternal Health Week is an opportunity to raise awareness and take action to improve the health of Black mothers. The Health Resources and Services Administration has created a toolkit including a website banner, virtual meeting background, and social media graphic cards with written messaging content to help you raise awareness, drive action, and advocate for positive change in Black maternal health.

Recommended Reading

In recognition of Black Maternal Health Week, the OMH Knowledge Center is featuring Black Women's Maternal Health: A Multifaceted Approach to Addressing Persistent and Dire Health Inequities. This report from the National Partnership for Women & Families discusses the substantial disparities in maternal health care and outcomes for Black women in the United States, including lower quality of care and higher rates of complications and death. It identifies systemic racism as the key driver of these disparities and urges policy changes and healthcare reforms to address these disparities, such as providing respectful, culturally concordant maternal health care, expanding reproductive care access, implementing paid maternity leave and improved pregnancy accommodations in the workplace, and supporting research on the experiences and outcomes of Black disabled birthing people.
