New Data Brief from OMH and ASPE: Substance Use and Substance Use Disorders by Race and Ethnicity
Approaching Deadline for OMH's HHS Environmental Justice Community Innovator Challenge: January 30
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions is making extreme heat events in the United States more frequent and more intense. The health effects of extreme heat events do not affect different demographic groups equally. OMH is seeking applications for Tribal and community-led strategies to address health disparities in Tribes and communities disproportionately burdened by environmental and climate change-related hazards. Phase 1 Deadline is January 30.

Meeting of the Advisory Committee on Minority Health
On February 13-14, the Advisory Committee on Minority Health (ACMH) will have a meeting focusing on the implementation of the anticipated updates to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) federal race and ethnicity data collection standards. Pre-registration is required for the public to attend the meeting, provide comments, and/or distribute printed materials to ACMH members.
Members of the public must register for the meeting by January 30, at 5:00 p.m. ET by sending an email to OMH-ACMH@hhs.gov with the following information: name, affiliation, phone number, email address, days attending, and if participation is in-person or via webcast. Meeting Date and Time: February 13-14, at 8:30 a.m. ET, in Rockville, Maryland.

The National Health, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) have published a new fact sheet providing helpful information for people with blood diseases and disorders regarding participation in clinical trials. It provides an explanation of clinical trial phases, questions patients can ask their doctors, and research about clinical trial participation. This fact sheet is part of NHLBI’s collection of publications for consumers and health professionals on a variety of topics related to heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders.

Topical Guide: Intergenerational Engagement
The 2023 U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community calls attention to the importance of social connection for individual health, community-wide metrics of health and well-being, and the significant consequences when social connection is lacking. The Commit to Connect initiative from the Association for Community Living aims to increase awareness and availability of programs that address social isolation and loneliness. This topical guide from the Commit to Connect initiative introduces programs that are utilizing intergenerational engagement as a method to address social isolation and loneliness and tips for organizations to build their own intergenerational programing.

This study, sponsored by the Michigan State University in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute, will evaluate communication strategies for better encouraging, understanding, and uptake of salivary SARS-CoV-2 antibody testing among rural individuals. This study will take place in Flint, Michigan.
Suicide Prevention Intervention for Vulnerable Emerging Adult Sexual Minorities

The University of Southern California Alzheimer’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease Related Dementias Resource Center for Minority Aging Research will support three pilot grants supporting junior scientists for one-year projects focusing on cognitive decline and/or Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. CDC Evaluation Fellowship Program
