988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Messaging and Communications to People at Higher Risk for or Disproportionately Impacted by Suicide

988 Suicide Crisis Lifeline

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is the leading cause of the death in the U.S., accounting for 48 deaths in 2021 alone. Disparities in factors related to suicide exist across different groups including veterans, people who live in rural areas, sexual and gender minorities, middle-aged adults, people of color, and tribal populations.

After the July 2022 transition to the 988 Lifeline from the previous 10-digit National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, more information was needed to make sure groups disproportionately impacted by suicide were made aware of the change and to instill trust and confidence in the service. The 988 Formative Research Project aimed to uncover the attitudes, beliefs, perceptions, barriers, and motivations related to 988 and identifying help-seeking behaviors among populations with a higher risk for or disproportionately impacted by suicide as a first step in better understanding how to reach and engage them.

Hunger Pains: How Food Insecurity Affects Oral Health

Hunger Pains Report

According to the CDC, a higher percentage of non-Hispanic Black children and Hispanic children live in food-insecure households than non-Hispanic White children. Survey findings produced by the CareQuest Institute for Oral Health, Inc. found that food insecurity is linked to poorer oral health outcomes. Food insecurity disproportionately affects certain groups such as racial and ethnic minorities, individuals with less than a high school education, low-income individuals, and those living in rural areas. The report provides oral health professionals with information to help them integrate food intake questions into their care and provide resources to patients experiencing food insecurity.
