September 18 is National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day
National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day aims to combat the stigma faced by older Americans with HIV and address the aging-related challenges of HIV testing, prevention, and care.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2018, over half of adults living with HIV were over the age of 50. Additionally, studies predict that by 2030 over 70 percent of the HIV positive population in the U.S. will be over 50.
Visit the CDC Let’s Stop HIV Together website for additional information, graphics, social media messaging, and more to increase awareness of HIV, address stigma, and encourage older adults to get tested and know their status.

September 19: #HealthLatinos Bilingual Twitter Chat
Join the HHS Office of Minority Health, the FDA Office of Minority Health and Health Equity, the CDC Office of Health Equity, the Mental Health Technology Transfer Center (MHTTC), and the National Hispanic and Latino MHTTC for a bilingual Twitter chat to kick off National Hispanic Heritage Month.
The chat will discuss how health care providers can address social determinants of health when providing health care to Hispanic/Latino patients and patients with limited English proficiency. This chat will also encourage patients to ask for language services and community health workers/patient navigators when accessing health care services. Join the conversation using the hashtag #HealthyLatinos.

Observance: National Recovery Month
Every September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) leads National Recovery Month. This observance aims to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the nation’s strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and communities who make recovery in all its forms possible.
This year’s theme, Hope is Real, Recovery is Real, aims to increase public awareness surrounding mental health and addiction recovery, because with the right treatment, support, and resources, recovery is possible for everyone.

Harm Reduction in HIV Primary Care for People Living with HIV Who Use Drugs
This study, sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh in collaboration with the National Institute on Drug Abuse, will explore the extent to which harm reduction care mitigates stigma experienced in health care settings and contributes to improved clinical outcomes. This study will be conducted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
A Reinforcement Intervention for Increasing HIV Testing Among At-Risk Women
This study, sponsored by UConn Health in collaboration with the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, will test a reinforcement-based intervention to increase HIV testing and repeat testing among African American, Latina, and women living in poverty who have risk factors for HIV. This study will be conducted in Farmington, Connecticut.

The National Hispanic Health Foundation Professional Student Scholarship Program supports students in graduate medical, nursing, dental, pharmacy, and physician associate programs who are committed to serving Hispanics/Latinos.

Dental Public Health Residency Program
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Dental Public Health Residency Program aims to produce skilled specialists in dental public health who can work collaboratively with their public health and dental colleagues in an array of health settings to achieve improved oral health for populations.
Deadline for application is September 30.
National Health Service Corps Students to Service Loan Repayment Program
The 2024 National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Students to Service (S2S) Loan Repayment Program (LRP) from the Health Resources & Services Administration awards up to $120,000 in assistance. In return, medical, physician assistant, nursing, and dental students in their final year of school agree to serve a three-year commitment to providing primary care services at NHSC-approved sites in high-need, underserved areas.
New this year is the Maternity Care Target Area Supplemental Award which provides a supplemental award of up to $40,000 in loan repayment funding to maternity care health professional participants.
