National Women's Health Week: May 8-14
National Women's Health Week (NWHW), hosted by the HHS Office on Women's Health (OWH), encourages women and girls to reflect on their individual needs and take steps to improve and maintain their overall health.
This year's theme, Women’s Health, Whole Health: Prevention, Care and Wellbeing, emphasizes the most common conditions that affect women including preventative health, health disparities, reproductive and sexual health, heart disease, physical activity, mental health, and cancer.
Join OWH and NWHW Ambassador, RDML Felicia Collins, Director of the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH), to amplify the importance of women’s health.

Vital Signs: Culturally Competent Care and Opportunities for Trust Building in Pursuit of Health Equity
The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation will be hosting a session at this year’s Policy for the People Health Equity Summit entitled Vital Signs: Culturally Competent Care and Opportunities for Trust Building in Pursuit of Health Equity.
The panel will include OMH Director, RDML Felicia Collins, and other health experts who will discuss current trends in culturally competent care and opportunities to modernize policy and practice. May 23, at 11:15 a.m. ET, in Washington, D.C. and online.

New Think Cultural Health Newsletter
OMH Think Cultural Health launched a newsletter dedicated to raising awareness of culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS) in health and health care.
CLAS is a way for health and health care professionals to provide respectful and responsive services, improve quality of care, and advance health equity. OMH developed a set of 15 action steps called the National CLAS Standards to guide organizations in providing CLAS.
The May 2023 Edition of the newsletter highlights Black maternal health, cultural competency training, and language assistance services.

May 17 is World Hypertension Day
Our Healthy Eating Plate: Filipino/a/x and Hmong Editions
The Our Healthy Eating Plate: Filipino/a/x and Hmong Editions, created by the Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations (AAPCHO) and MPH Salud, are healthy eating brochures that include the cultural traditions and dietary preferences of Filipino/a/x and Hmong communities. Individuals can learn about portion sizes, nutrition facts, and tips to help adopt healthier eating habits.
The Healthy Plate Series dietary guidelines are offered in English, Tagalog, and Hmong. They are aligned with USDA Health Plate recommendations and help community organizations and health professionals have culturally relevant conversations with individuals from vulnerable communities around nutrition.

Mental Health Toolkit: Staying Well & Living Well
The Mental Health Toolkit 1: Staying Well & Living Well, developed by the Asian American Health Initiative (AAHI), is the first of three toolkits that provide culturally competent, reliable information about mental health for community leaders and members to share with their respective communities in various settings.
AAHI works to eliminate health disparities that exist between Asian Americans and their non-Asian counterparts, including mental health.

Updated SAMHSA 988 Partner Toolkit
The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline offers 24/7 call, text, and chat access to trained crisis counselors who can help people experiencing suicidal, substance use, and/or mental health crisis, or any other kind of emotional distress for themselves or a loved one.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) developed the 988 Partner Toolkit to create a clear understanding of what the 988 Lifeline is and how it works. In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, the toolkit was updated with exclusive branded resources including social media messaging, fact sheets, graphics, videos, and other essential tools. Organizations can use the toolkit to promote 988 in their communities.

Implementation of Multifaceted Patient-Centered Treatment Strategies for Intensive Blood Pressure Control in Minimize Cognitive Decline (IMPACTS-MIND)
This study, sponsored by Tulane University in collaboration with the National Institute on Aging (NIA), will test a multifaceted strategy for implementing an intensive blood pressure intervention protocol on cognitive decline in racial minority and low-income hypertensive patients in primary care. This study will be conducted in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Targeting of UnControlled Hypertension in Emergency Department (TOUCHED)
This study, sponsored by the University of Illinois at Chicago in collaboration with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), intends to examine the high prevalence of uncontrolled/undiagnosed hypertension in underrepresented groups presenting to the emergency department and how emergency department engagement and early risk assessment/stratification is a cost-effective, feasible innovation to help close health disparity gaps in hypertension. This study will take place in Chicago, Illinois.

Summer Research Training Institute
The virtual Northwest Native American Research Center for Health (NARCH) Summer Research Training Institute (SRTI) is an intensive two-week summer research training program designed for health professionals and students interested in Native health. Each week offers short courses emphasizing practical skill-building in research, program evaluation, and implementation. Deadline for registration is June 5, at 11:00 a.m. ET. June 12-23.
Care for the Underserved Pathways AHEC Scholars Program
The Care for the Underserved Pathways Area Health Education (AHEC) Scholars Program is a two-year program offered by the University of New England and the Maine AHEC Network that provides opportunities for health professions students to increase leadership skills, gain competencies in interprofessional education and team-based practice, understand and address health disparities and the social determinants of health in rural and underserved communities, and understand the role of practice transformation in addressing significant health and public health issues. Deadline for Application is August 7.
