May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Mental Health Awareness Month is an annual observance led by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to raise awareness about mental health, fight stigma, provide support, educate the public, and advocate for policies that support the millions of people in the U.S. affected by mental illness.
This year’s NAMI campaign, More Than Enough, provides an opportunity for all to come together and remember everyone’s inherent value no matter their diagnosis, appearance, socioeconomic status, background, or ability.
Additionally, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is recognizing the observance by promoting weekly themes about acceptance, compassion, positivity, managing mental health, and seeking support.

Building Healthier Communities through Language Access: AANHPI Perspectives and Solutions
Ensuring ready access to culturally and linguistically appropriate resources is critical for advancing health equity. Join the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) for a webinar highlighting creative solutions for providing language access services to diverse Asian populations in both community and healthcare settings. The presentation will be followed by a facilitated panel with an additional expert representing Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities.

Produce Prescription Pilot Program
Cooperative agreement from the Indian Health Service (IHS) to help establish Produce Prescription Programs that will help increase access to fruits, vegetables, and healthy traditional foods for American Indian and Alaska Native people.

Tribal Self-Governance Planning Cooperative Agreement Program
Cooperative agreement from the Indian Health Service (IHS) to provide resources to Tribes interested in entering the Tribal Self-Governance Program in assuming new or expanded Programs, Services, Functions, and Activities relating to the administration of health care programs.

Mapping Medicare Disparities (MMD) Tool
Chronic diseases pose a significant problem in the U.S. resulting in substantial morbidity, mortality, disability, and cost.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) designed the Mapping Medicare Disparities (MMD) Tool to identify areas of disparities between subgroups of Medicare enrollees (e.g., racial and ethnic minority groups) in health outcomes, utilization, and spending.

The State of Senior Hunger in America in 2021: An Annual Report
Black seniors have a food insecurity rate that is over three times higher than that of white seniors. Similarly, the food insecurity rate of Hispanic seniors (of any racial category) is just over twice the rate of non-Hispanic seniors.
Feeding America recently released its annual report, The State of Senior Hunger in America in 2021, detailing the state of hunger among senior Americans ages 60 and older in 2021 using data from the most recently available Current Population Survey (CPS).

This study, sponsored by the University of California Riverside, aims to pilot test a culturally grounded intervention to increase mental health treatment seeking among Pacific Islanders with mental disorders. This study will be conducted in Riverside, California.
Adolescent-mediated Family Diabetes Intervention: American Samoa
This study, sponsored by Yale University in collaboration with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), aims to test the efficacy of an adolescent-mediated intervention designed to improve the glycemic control and self-care practices of a parent/grandparent. This study will be conducted in Pago Pago, American Samoa.

Health Equity Scholars for Action
The Health Equity Scholars for Action grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation aims to enhance the supports, resources, and community necessary for participants with historically underrepresented backgrounds to thrive professionally and personally. In turn, researchers will be better able to contribute to and expand health equity-related research and evidence that dismantle systemic and structural barriers to health and wellbeing.
