White Paper & Workshop: Engaging Community Health Workers and Youth Ambassadors to Improve Health Literacy

OMH & NASEM

The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) recently published the white paper Engaging Youth and Young Adults in Community-Based Strategies to Improve Health Literacy, focusing on involving youth and young adults in community-based public health campaigns to improve health literacy and reduce health disparities.

The paper explores federal actions addressing health literacy and the work grantees have completed through funding from OMH involving youth leadership and training for potential community health workers.

As part of the release, OMH and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) invites you to join tomorrow’s workshop, Engaging Community Health Workers/Youth Ambassadors to Improve Health Literacy, featuring recipients of OMH grant programs, Advancing Health Literacy to Enhance Equitable Community Responses to COVID-19 and the National Infrastructure for Mitigating the Impact of COVID-19 within Racial and Ethnic Minority Communities.

April 22: National Minority Health Month Hike at Sugarloaf Mountain

The MPhA Federal Pharmacist Network (MPhA-FPN) is hosting a 6.2-mile (10K)/1-mile hike at the Sugarloaf Mountain Northern Peaks Trails in honor of National Minority Health Month to bring awareness to the health disparities that continue to affect people from racial and ethnic minority groups and encourage action through health education, early detection, and control of disease complications. Snacks and water will be provided.
April 22, at 9:00 a.m. ET, in Dickerson, Maryland.

American Indian and Alaska Native Behavioral Health Center of Excellence

Cooperative agreement from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to establish a Center of Excellence to advance the behavioral health equity of American Indians and Alaska Natives by developing and disseminating culturally-informed, evidence-based behavioral health information and providing technical assistance and training on issues related to addressing behavioral health disparities.

National Institutes of Health Helping to End Action Long-term Initiative (NIH HEAL Initiative®) Annual Report

HEAL

In both 2020 and 2021, Non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native people had the highest drug overdose death rates. The NIH HEAL Initiative® is a trans-agency effort to speed scientific solutions to stem the national opioid public health crisis.

The 2023 annual report outlines the diverse work under the HEAL Initiative such as a HEAL-funded study that is testing culturally appropriate methods for integrating the use of medications into treatments for opioid use disorder in American Indian/Alaska Native communities hosted a collaborative board meeting with tribal Elders, cultural leaders, and other stakeholders from this population that have been especially affected by the opioid crisis.

Exploring the Feasibility of Kōmmour Prenatal to Reduce Maternal and Infant Health Disparities

This study, sponsored by the University of Arkansas, intends to culturally adapt and examine the feasibility of a group prenatal program (Kōmmour Prenatal) to reduce maternal and infant health disparities among Marshallese Pacific Islander women and gather information from providers of Kōmmour Prenatal and stakeholders in the Marshallese community familiar with the program to learn of their experience with the program. This study will be conducted in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Building Resiliency and Vital Equity (BRAVE) Project: Understanding Native Americans' Perceptions/Beliefs About COVID-19 Testing and Vaccination Study (BRAVE)

This study, sponsored by the North Carolina Central University, intends to partner with American Indian tribal communities in North Carolina to establish COVID-19 services and resources for American Indian communities to understand the barriers and social implications of COVID-19 testing and vaccination among American Indians by designing and implementing culturally sensitive survey tools and intervention materials. This study will be conducted in Pembroke, North Carolina.

Indian Health Service (IHS) Loan Repayment Program

This ongoing loan repayment program from the Indian Health Service (IHS) helps dedicated health professionals repay eligible health profession education loans in exchange for an initial two-year service commitment to practice in health facilities serving American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Opportunities are based on Indian health program facilities with the greatest staffing needs in specific health profession disciplines.
Deadline for application is on the 15th of each month.
