Maternal Health Research Collaborative Opportunities for Minority-Serving Institutions

HRSA

In 2020, the maternal mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black women was significantly higher than rates for non-Hispanic White and Hispanic women.

Two forecasted cooperative agreements from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) aim to foster research addressing disparities in maternal mortality, severe maternal morbidity, and maternal health outcomes and to find community-based solutions to address these disparities and advance health equity. The estimated post date for both cooperative agreements is March 29.

Advancing Equity in Adolescent Health through Evidence-Based Teen Pregnancy Prevention Programs and Services

Cooperative agreement from the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH) to support organizations aiming to advance health equity for adolescents, their family, and communities through the replication and scaling of medically accurate and age appropriate evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention programs that have been proven effective through rigorous evaluation to reduce teenage pregnancy, behavioral risk factors underlying teenage pregnancy, or other associated risk factors.

Advancing Integrated Models of Care to Improve Pregnancy Outcomes among Women Who Experience Persistent Disparities

Grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to stimulate research to advance the implementation and expansion of interventions, policies, and programs, focused on the provision of supportive care throughout the pregnancy continuum, among populations who bear a disproportionate burden of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) has expanded the PhenX Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Collection.

With this expansion, the PhenX Social Determinants of Health Toolkit now includes 37 measurement protocols for use in research where information is being collected from individuals about their physical/built environment, sociocultural environment or healthcare system, and factors at the societal or community level linked to a specific geographic area.

Increasing Community Access to Testing for COVID-19

COVID

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Increasing Community Access to Testing (ICATT) program provides access to COVID-19 testing by focusing on communities at greater risk of being impacted by the pandemic, people without health insurance, and surge testing in state and local jurisdictions.

The program prioritizes testing resources for people who are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19. The tests are billed to third-party payers, such as Medicare, Medicaid, and private health insurers.

The 2023 Native Americans into Medicine Summer Program

The Center of American Indian and Minority Health at the University of Minnesota provides a seven-week summer enrichment program in Duluth, Minnesota that runs from June 20 - August 4 for college sophomores, juniors, and seniors interested in pursuing health careers. Accepted students earn a stipend for living expenses, and campus housing is available.

Maternal and Child Health Home Visiting and Early Childhood Systems Health Research Fellowship

Research fellowship by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Division of Home Visiting and Early Childhood Systems (DHVECS) will build upon projects to develop a measurement and evaluation strategy to assess, continually improve and articulate the progress and impact of early childhood systems programs. The fellow will also support projects across the entire portfolio of early childhood systems and home visiting programs that explore qualitative and quantitative methods to measure advancements towards eliminating inequality and advancing health equity across the various program areas.

In recognition of National Nutrition Month, the OMH Knowledge Center is featuring Sisters Together: Move More, Eat Better Program Guide, a publication from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) about the agency’s national program that promotes health awareness for black women ages 18 and older.
