OMH Announces the Theme for National Minority Health Month 2023
The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) is proud to announce the theme for National Minority Health Month 2023: Better Health Through Better Understanding.
This year’s theme focuses on improving health outcomes for racial and ethnic minority and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities by providing them with culturally and linguistically competent healthcare services, information, and resources.
Visit the National Minority Health Month website through April to access shareable social media messages and graphics, and to learn more about the importance of:
- Increased health literacy for patients
- Providing culturally competent care for diverse populations
- Improving access to health care information for patients with limited English proficiency (LEP)

March 10 is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is a day to raise awareness about the impact of HIV on women and show support for women and girls with HIV.
In 2019, the HIV incidence rate for Black/African American women was 11 times the rate for White females and 4 times the rate for Hispanic/Latino females. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are pursuing a high-impact HIV prevention approach to maximize the effectiveness of HIV prevention interventions and strategies.

Enhancing Telehealth Strategies to Support Retention and Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy
Cooperative agreement from the CDC to support the evaluation of the effectiveness of an enhanced telehealth program to improve adherence to HIV prevention and treatment medication. The program will focus on those disproportionately affected by HIV or at risk for HIV infection, including cis-gender Black or African American women with HIV, transgender women. and gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.

Using Archived Data and Specimen Collections to Advance Maternal and Pediatric HIV/AIDS Research
Grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to address the needs of the maternal and pediatric HIV scientific community for research data translation and sharing.

Comprehensive Systems Integration for Adolescent and Young Adult Health
Cooperative agreement from HRSA to increase the capacity of states, territories, and tribal organizations to integrate systems of care, including health, school, and community systems, to promote adolescent and young adult health and well-being.

Expanding Rapid Initiation of Antiretroviral Therapy in Non-traditional Settings: Emergency Department
Cooperative agreement from the CDC to support implementation research on the rapid or immediate initiation of HIV antiretroviral therapy for persons newly diagnosed with HIV or for persons with HIV returning to care in Emergency Department settings.
Deadline is March 22, at 11:59 p.m. ET.
Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN)
Cooperative agreement from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to improve pediatric emergency care by supporting the development and dissemination of evidence-based guidelines for hospital emergency departments and prehospital emergency medical services.

Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH)

National HIV/AIDS Strategy (2022-2025)
The National HIV/AIDS Strategy (2022-2025) is the nation’s roadmap for ending the HIV epidemic in the U.S. by 2030. It recognizes racism as a serious public health threat that drives and affects both HIV outcomes and disparities.
The Strategy highlights that certain populations bear most of the burden, signaling where HIV prevention, care, and treatment efforts must be focused. It designates five priority populations: gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, in particular, Black, Latino, and American Indian/Alaska Native men; Black women; transgender women; youth aged 13-24 years; and people who inject drugs.

HEAL Prevention Cooperative Podcast Series: Women Leading Prevention Science
The Helping to End Addiction Long-term® Initiative (HEAL) funded through the NIH, is a trans-NIH effort to improve prevention and treatment strategies for opioid misuse and addiction and to enhance pain management.
The HEAL Prevention Initiative supports research to prevent opioid misuse and disorder among vulnerable older adolescents and young adults ages 15–30. The podcast Women Leading Prevention Science was developed as part of the initiative to introduce listeners to women researchers discussing their work and experiences in prevention science.

National Maternal Mental Health Hotline
Are you a new parent and feeling sad, worried, overwhelmed, or concerned that you aren’t good enough? You aren’t alone. The National Maternal Mental Health Hotline provides free, confidential, 24/7 emotional support, resources, and referrals to pregnant and postpartum individuals facing mental health challenges and their loved ones.
Counselors offer support by phone and text in English and Spanish. Interpreter services are available in 60 additional languages. For help when it’s needed, call or text 1-833-943-5746 (1-833-9-HELP4MOMS).

Mobile HIV Prevention App for Black Women (In-the-kNOW)
This study, sponsored by the Emory University, intends to refine and test a mobile HIV Prevention and Reproductive Health app developed specifically for Black women. This study will be conducted in Atlanta, Georgia.
HIV Prevention Peer Navigation for Justice Involved Women (kINSHIP)
This study, sponsored by the University of California, San Francisco, intends to develop and test a peer-led patient navigation intervention for criminal-justice involved (CJI) women at risk of HIV acquisition to reduce intersectional stigma and improve uptake and linkage to PrEP services, thereby increasing access to PrEP and decreasing PrEP-related disparities. This study will be conducted in San Francisco, California.

2023 IHS/Tribal/Urban Basic and Refresher Colposcopy Course
In-person and online colposcopy course from the IHS designed for new and experienced IHS, Tribal, and Urban Indian Clinic colposcopy providers involved in the evaluation and treatment of cervical dysplasia The format includes lectures, interactive audience response session, and small group case review sessions with discussion of colposcopic images. The course is free to providers from IHS/Tribal/Urban Indian Health facilities.

National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) Diversity Scholarships
Scholarship sponsored by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) for students of color who do not hold an EMS certification but who intend to become an EMT or paramedic. The goal of the scholarship program is to promote the development of greater diversity in the EMS workforce so that the workforce reflects the communities they serve.
