National Human Trafficking Prevention Month

National Human Trafficking Prevention Month

January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Assistant Secretary for Health Rachel Levine, M.D. wrote a blog post about HHS’ SOAR to Health and Wellness, a nationally recognized, accredited training program to help health care and social service providers identify, treat, and respond to patients who have experienced trafficking.

Last year, HHS Secretary Becerra formed the HHS Task Force to Prevent Human Trafficking to implement the National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking and create greater awareness about the scope of this problem.

Meeting Substance Use and Social Service Needs in Communities of Color

The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) and HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) have partnered on issue briefs focused on substance use treatment disparities among people of color and substance use treatment approaches.

This brief, titled Addressing Substance Use and Social Service Needs in Communities of Color, describes findings from a joint study that examined the experiences and practices of substance use treatment providers and their human services partners when serving people of color. The brief also summarizes common approaches the substance use treatment programs take and the challenges they face in their work.

HCUP Visualization of Inpatient Trends in COVID-19 and Other Conditions

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has updated the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) Visualization tool on hospitalizations, an interactive visualization displaying state-specific monthly trends in inpatient stays for related multiple health conditions, including COVID-19.

This visualization now includes full-year 2021 data from 32 states plus the District of Columbia and additional data from 15 states through the first quarter of 2022.

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and CDC's The Inside Knowledge Campaign raises awareness of the five main types of gynecologic cancer: cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar. The campaign encourages women to pay attention to their bodies, so they can recognize any warning signs and seek medical care.

Predicting Sleep, Smoking, and Lung Health Disparities in African American Adults

This study, sponsored by Temple University, in collaboration with the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), will seek to determine the individual, social, and environmental predictors of sleep duration, quality, latency, efficiency, timing and regularity in African American smokers. Additionally, it will quantify the future relationship between multiple metrics of sleep with tobacco use and examine the extent to which short sleep and other unhealthy sleep metrics, predicts lung function through smoking behaviors and inflammation, in African Americans at risk for advancing COPD. The study will be conducted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

American Psychiatric Association Diversity Leadership Fellowship

The two-year American Psychiatric Association program will prepare minority psychiatry residents or those interested in minority and vulnerable populations to teach, administer, and provide culturally competent, evidence-based mental health and substance abuse services for diverse minority groups and at-risk populations. Populations include American Indians, Native Alaskans, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, Native Pacific Islanders, Black/African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, LGBTQ, and religious minorities.
