September 15-October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month
Social determinants of health (SDOH) contribute to wide health disparities and inequities. For example, people who don't have access to grocery stores with healthy foods are less likely to have good nutrition, which can raise their risk of health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.
Visit the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) Hispanic Heritage Month website to learn more about the SDOH affecting Hispanic/Latino communities. You can also find helpful resources from OMH partners to share with your communities, patients, and organizations.

Hurricane Ian: Resources and Assistance

New CDC Campaign: Fight Flu – Don't Let it Stop You
Each year millions of children get the flu and thousands are hospitalized. There are many reasons to get a flu vaccine—whether to keep yourself healthy, prevent the worsening of a chronic health condition, or protect loved ones who may be more vulnerable to flu's potentially serious complications, like children.
CDC and OMH invite you to join us in encouraging everyone six months and older to get a flu vaccine this year with the new Fight Flu: Don't Let It Stop You campaign. The campaign includes resources to help you promote flu vaccination this season, including customizable frames and story panels.

Resources: Breast Cancer Among Hispanic/Latina Women
According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the highest cause of cancer-related deaths among Latina women.
Latinas Contra Cancer has created a video, available in English and Spanish, that provides culturally and linguistically sensitive information on common concerns and myths regarding breast cancer in Hispanic/Latino communities. Latinas Contra Cancer also provides English and Spanish-language videos on how a healthy diet can help prevent breast cancer.

This study, sponsored by the University of Colorado, Denver and NCI, seeks female volunteers ages 39-49 years old who have expressed negative reactions to mammography results. The study will be carried out at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, Colorado.
Improving Health Insurance Literacy Among Utah's Hispanic Population
This study, sponsored by the University of Utah, the Utah Health Policy Project, and NIH, seeks Hispanic/Latino volunteers ages 18-64 years old who live in Utah. The study will be carried out at the Utah Health Policy Project Action Center in West Valley City, Utah.

It's also a good time for parents, community leaders, and anyone who works with children to think about ways to help kids feel safe, healthy, and valued.
