HHS Awards $2 Million for New Center for Indigenous Innovation
and Health Equity

Center for Indigenous Innovation and Health Equity. HHS OMH.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) has announced nearly $2 million in awards to the University of Hawaii and the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences for a new initiative to establish the Center for Indigenous Innovation and Health Equity. The Center will support efforts including education, service and policy development, and research related to advancing sustainable solutions to address health disparities and advance health equity among American Indian and Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander populations.

Think Cultural Health: The National CLAS Standards

OMH's National CLAS Standards offer guidance on providing culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS). Standard 4 calls on organizations to "Educate and train governance, leadership, and workforce in culturally and linguistically appropriate policies and practices." The National Hispanic Medical Association Vaccinate4All campaign provides health professionals with resources to increase COVID-19 vaccination among Latinos.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, one of the largest increases in vaccinations July-September was among Latinos.

The Urban Indian Health Institute COVID-19 Data Dashboard and Urban Indian Organizations Service Area Site Reports provide data and case surveillance among American Indians and Alaska Natives. 

Cancer Survivor's Guide to Bone Health

The Cancer Survivor's Guide to Bone Health, developed by American Bone Health, seeks to help breast and metastatic cancer survivors, their loved ones, and caregivers understand how cancer and cancer treatments affect the bones. With this knowledge, cancer survivors can make a plan to protect their bones during their treatment and beyond, including avoiding falls and fractures.
