Through the Family-Centered Approaches to Improving Type 2 Diabetes Control and Prevention grant, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) will fund projects that test interventions to identify family-centered factors that promote self-management and prevention of Type 2 diabetes among racial and ethnic minority and disadvantaged families who have a family member(s) aged 12 and older with Type 2 diabetes.

OMH, the National Park Service, and the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders hosted the Past and Present: Addressing Racism and Intolerance Against Asian Americans virtual panel on May 8. The panel highlighted current federal efforts addressing racism and health inequities, including the COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force and the Presidential Memorandum Condemning and Combating Racism, Xenophobia, and Intolerance Against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the U.S.

The National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) virtual briefing series on COVID-19 addresses lessons learned by healthcare providers from the pandemic on chronic care patients, mental health, the future of healthcare delivery, elderly issues, and terminal illness planning. Session 8 of the series, Monoclonal Antibody Therapy for COVID-19 Latino Patients, will feature a presentation on health equity and COVID-19 among Hispanics/Latinos by CAPT David Wong, MD, Chief Medical Officer at OMH.

On May 12, HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, took part in the televised panel, Vaccinating America. They answered questions from a live audience about the safety of the COVID-19 vaccines, if people who have had COVID-19 should get the vaccine, if parents should get their children vaccinated, and new guidance on wearing face masks.

On May 10, the FDA authorized emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for adolescents ages 12-15 years old. You can learn more about the vaccine for children and teens at the Centers for Disease and Prevention (CDC) website. Parents who want to protect their child(ren) can find a COVID-19 vaccine at Vaccines.gov or by texting their zip code to 438829. The CDC has also published guidance and patient resources for pediatric healthcare professionals. 

Public Health Reports, the official journal of the U.S. Surgeon General and the U.S. Public Health Service has published two new articles that address COVID-19 health disparities among racial and ethnic minorities in access to testing, virus positivity, and exposure as essential workers: Robust Testing in Outpatient Settings to Explore COVID-19 Epidemiology: Disparities in Race/Ethnicity and Age, Salt Lake County, Utah, 2020 and Disparities in Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 Immunoglobulin Antibodies in a Large Midwestern Health Care System. 

To help move Hispanics/Latinos from vaccine hesitancy to vaccine confidence, the Salud America! national program at UT Health San Antonio has created the Change of Heart Bilingual Storytelling Campaign to uplift the stories of real Hispanics/Latinos who overcame misinformation, got the vaccine, reconnected with family, and are helping end the pandemic. Visit the campaign website to find and share Hispanic/Latino #VaccineChangeofHeart stories in English and Spanish. You also can share your own story with Salud America! 

The Ministry of the Interior of México, through the Consejo Nacional de Población (National Population Council), invites specialists in migration and border health issues to participate in the digital publication Migration and Health 2021. Authors may submit papers in English or Spanish on topics including COVID-19, reproductive health, mental health, chronic disease, health care access, and family health.

The California Reducing Disparities Project, created by the California Department of Mental Health in collaboration with the California Department of Public Health Office of Health Equity, is a California-wide initiative to identify solutions to disparities in mental health services access for racial and ethnic minority and LGBTQ communities. Five population reports were developed by community stakeholders that captured access to and availability of mental health services and recommendations to address disparities in mental wellness for each population, including a report on the AAPI community in California: In Our Own Words.
