April 11-17 is Black Maternal Health Week
Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW), April 11-17, is observed during National Minority Health Month in an effort to bring awareness of the gaps in maternal health experienced by Black women in the U.S. The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) works with partners to reach, educate and inform racial and ethnic minority populations during BMHW by amplifying efforts from federal and non-federal partners.
OMH's free maternal health e-learning curriculum is designed to develop maternal health care providers' knowledge and skills related to culturally and linguistically appropriate services, person centered care and understanding implicit bias across the continuum of maternal health care. The course includes information on maternal health disparities experienced specifically by Black and American Indian individuals.

Several events and initiatives are also being carried out throughout April 11-17 and beyond that address Black maternal health issues, including social justice and rural health care access.

The Acting Secretary of Health and Human Services has signed an amendment to the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act declaration that expands the pool of qualified people who can become COVID-19 vaccinators. You can now sign up to administer vaccines in your community, as both a health professional or a lay volunteer. Visit the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response website to Register with Your State or Territory.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have put together a collection of COVID-19 One-Stop Shop Toolkits. The 21 available toolkits can help you tailor your messages to audiences including pregnant people, Tribal communities, people living with disabilities, and different school or child care settings.
A recent CDC study found that race/ethnicity data was unknown or not reported for 48% of people vaccinated. Inaccurate data leads to underfunded and under-resourced programs. The Urban Indian Health Institute graded the quality of COVID-19 racial data and their effectiveness in collecting and reporting data on American Indian and Alaska Native populations. The results were published as the report, Data Genocide of American Indians and Alaska Natives in COVID-19 Data.

International Registry of Coronavirus Exposure in Pregnancy
This study, sponsored by the Pregistry and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, seeks women age 18 years or older who are pregnant or contemplating becoming pregnant and who are or may be infected with COVID-19. The study will be carried out online.
Improving Health Outcomes in Young Cisgender Men and Transgender Women (mLab App Study)
This study, sponsored by Columbia University and the NIH National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), seeks HIV-negative cisgender men and transgender women, ages 18-29 years old, who are at high risk for HIV infection. The study will test the mLab App, which combines HIV prevention information with push notifications/reminders to complete HIV testing and a feature that provides real-time feedback on home-based HIV test results. The study will be carried out at the Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, Illinois and the Columbia University School of Nursing in New York City.

Training: Maternal Telehealth Access Project
The Maternal Telehealth Access Project, an initiative of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Maternal Health Learning & Innovation Center, will offer several virtual training opportunities in Spring 2021 to support maternity care providers and organizations who are navigating the challenges of providing care during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially via telehealth.
Toxicology Mentoring and Skills Development Training Program
Led by the University of California Davis and the Society of Toxicology, the Toxicology Mentoring and Skills Development Training Program (ToxMSDT) is an NIH-funded program whose primary goal is to build a pathway for underrepresented students in STEM to enhance their competitiveness to join toxicology graduate programs and eventually the toxicology profession. The program is open to undergraduate STEM majors who have completed at least one semester of general biology and general chemistry and are currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate institution and will be enrolled for the full 2021-2022 academic year.
Deadline is May 1.
Training: Taking Action Against Microaggressions
Developed by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, this collection of three courses explains the concept of microaggressions, their mental health impact, and what steps you can take to combat microaggressions, including recognizing micro-aggressive behavior in yourself and how you can respond to microaggressions as both the target and as a bystander. These courses offer continuing education (CE) credit.
