Cultural and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) in Maternal Health Care

nurse and pregnant woman

Over the past 30 years, the maternal mortality rate in the U.S. has doubled, with significantly higher rates among Black women and American Indian and Alaska Native women. Ensuring maternal healthcare providers deliver the highest quality of care to all of their patients is a critical way to eliminate these disparities. Designed for providers and students, this e-learning program, available at the HHS Office of Minority Health’s Think Cultural Health website, helps guide maternal healthcare professionals toward this goal by training them on delivering culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS).

 THIS E-LEARNING PROGRAM COVERS:

  • Self-awareness of beliefs, bias, and stereotypes
  • How and why to get to know a patient’s cultural identity
  • Strategies for providing respectful, compassionate, high quality maternal healthcare

FOUR REASONS YOU SHOULD TAKE THIS PROGRAM:

  • Learn how to improve your quality of care by understanding, respecting, and responding to a patient’s experiences, values, and beliefs
  • Earn up to 2 continuing education credits at no cost. Accredited for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, certified nurse midwives, and certified midwives. A statement of participation is available for all other professions, including students
