Happy New Year 2021 from OMH!

The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) wishes everyone a happy and healthy New Year! We look forward to continuing to work with our partners in addressing health disparities and achieving health equity for all in 2021 and beyond.

The safest way to celebrate the new year is to celebrate at home with the people who live with you or virtually with friends and family. Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others. Travel and gatherings with family and friends who do not live with you can increase your chances of getting and spreading COVID-19 or the flu.

New! HHS Offices of Minority Health COVID-19 Initiatives and Resources

OMH has created a new COVID-19 Initiatives and Resources webpage, where you can find information on OMH and HHS initiatives and efforts to address the impact of the pandemic on racial and ethnic minority communities.  

The Black AIDS Institute, the San Francisco Community Health Center and the Latino Commission on AIDS have published the Final Report of the COVID-19 Virtual Think Tank: Ten Action Steps to Enhance the Health and Quality of Life of Communities of Color across the U.S., which addresses COVID-19, the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative, viral hepatitis and STIs in communities of color. 

Survey: The State of Telehealth Services in Indian Country

NIHB is asking for a tribal representative from each of the 574 federally-recognized American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) tribes to complete an online and anonymous survey on the state of primary, behavioral and other telehealth services and capacity in Indian Country. Survey responses will be analyzed into a list of themes and recommendations that will be shared with tribes and stakeholders to help advance efforts in securing resources for improvements to AI/AN telehealth. 
Deadline is January 16.

The HHS Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed and compiled several hypertension resources for health professionals, including patient handouts, guidelines and recommendations, training programs and the Hypertension Communications Kit, which includes social media messages, graphics and more.

In Utero Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Alpha-thalassemia Major (ATM Study)

This Phase 1 clinical trial, sponsored by UCSF and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, seeks pregnant women with fetuses from 18 weeks and 0/7 days to 26 weeks 0/7 days gestation with a fetal diagnosis of alpha-thalassemia major by chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, cordocentesis, or by identification of parents as genetic carriers and identification of fetal anemia or signs of impending hydrops, for whom parents elect to pursue in utero transfusion for the remainder of gestation. The study is to be conducted at UCSF in San Francisco, CA.

Understanding the Postpartum Pain Experience in Women of Minority Race/Ethnicity

This observational study, sponsored by Northwestern University and the NIH Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), seeks pregnant and postpartum women age 16 years or older who either receive publicly funded prenatal care or are uninsured. The study is to be conducted at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL.

Call for Nominations: OMH Advisory Committee on Minority Health

OMH is seeking nominations of qualified candidates to be considered for appointment as a member of the Advisory Committee on Minority Health. The Committee provides advice to the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Minority Health on the development of goals and specific program activities for improving the health and the quality of healthcare minorities receive and eliminating racial and ethnic health disparities consistent with the Public Health Service Act.
Deadline is March 4, 5:00 pm ET.
