Hispanic Heritage Month 2020
Hispanic Heritage Month takes place every year from September 15 to October 15. During the month, OMH will celebrate the culture, achievements and contributions of Hispanics and Latinos in the United States. OMH will focus on raising awareness about the health disparities impacting the Hispanic/Latino community and promote physical activity, healthy nutrition and regular doctor visits to help improve overall health, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. OMH will also join HHS efforts to promote the influenza vaccine during the 2020-2021 flu season and amplify resources about the importance of Hispanic participation in clinical trials.

Making It Plain... African Americans and the COVID-19 Vaccine
The Black Coalition Against COVID and WHUR two part, national town hall will provide the Black/African American community with facts and expert perspectives regarding decisions associated with participating in COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials and acceptance of proven safe and efficacious vaccines when available. Each town hall will be followed by a one hour online question and answer segment. September 16 and 17, 7:00 pm ET.

The OMH Think Cultural Health initiative offers an e-learning program for community health workers and promotores, Promoting Healthy Choices and Community Changes (English) or Promoviendo decisiones saludables y cambios en la comunidad (Spanish).
During Hispanic Heritage Month, the HHS Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is shining a light on the generosity of Hispanic/Latino organ donors and the lives saved by their selfless gifts. HRSA is also bringing awareness to the more than 22,000 Hispanics/Latinos waiting for a life-saving organ. To register as an organ, eye and tissue donor, please visit Organdonor.gov or Donacionesdeorganos.gov.
The NIH National Cancer Institute (NCI) offers cancer information in Spanish through cancer.gov/español, Facebook and Twitter. Trained information specialists provide personalized responses, in Spanish and English, to questions about cancer through the Cancer Information Service. The National Alliance for Hispanic Health has developed the Nuestras Voces (Our Voices) Network Program, an initiative that addresses the prevalence of commercial tobacco use and tobacco related cancers among Hispanic/Latinos. Initiative resources include Spanish and English infocards on smoking cessation and cancer.
The National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA) offers several programs designed to meet the cultural and linguistic needs of Hispanic/Latino older adults, their families and caregivers, including programs on health literacy, vaccinations and heart health.
The Migrant Clinicians Network (MCN) published a Bilingual Picture Dictionary: Seguridad en Palabras/Safety in Words. The dictionary illustrates work place hazards and best practices for health and safety in agriculture for Hispanic/Latino workers.

Report: The State of Sickle Cell Disease Care in the United States
OMH is honored to commission the sickle cell disease (SCD) special supplement to the Annals of Emergency Medicine: "The State of Sickle Cell Disease Care in the United States: How Can Emergency Medicine Contribute?" With this supplement, OMH aims to highlight the critical role of emergency departments (ED) as frontline health care facilities for SCD care and to identify areas for improvement through increased collaboration between emergency physicians, hematologists and SCD patients and families. The 13 articles in this supplement address broad topics relevant to SCD care, including common clinical presentations in ED settings, emerging diagnostic modalities, barriers to care, and psychosocial factors such as patient stigma and implicit bias.

Positive Psychology Intervention for Spanish-speaking Hispanic/Latino Adults at Risk for Cardiovascular Disease
This behavioral study, sponsored by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), seeks Hispanics/Latinos, age 18 years or older, recruited from Catholic church sites in the Chicago-land area and who have elevated 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure levels (systolic BP> 140 mmHg and >90 mmHg for diastolic BP). Study is to be conducted at the St. Pius V Parish in Chicago, Ill.
Health Gatherings: For Your Health After Cancer

Fellowship: U.S. Latino Leadership

Training: Latinos During Emergencies: Cultural Considerations Impacting Disaster Preparedness

Speakers from the University at Albany and UnidosUS discuss cultural constructs and coping mechanisms among Hispanics/Latinos that may influence behavior in preparing for and recovering from a public health disaster.
Spanish-language Training: Proyecto ECHO: COVID-19 para trabajadores de salud comunitarios
MCN has developed a Spanish-language training series on COVID-19 for community health workers. This 4-session series will provide resources and training on COVID-19's impact on essential migrant and immigrant workers, both at work and in their communities. Speakers will address topics such as workplace psychosocial support, testing, vaccines and contact tracing. Participation is limited to 25 registrants. September 29 and October 6, 13 and 20, 3:00 pm ET. Please note that this training will only be offered in Spanish.
Scholarship: The BAMA-Latino Project
The University of Alabama's Capstone College of Nursing BAMA-Latino Project, funded by the HRSA Nursing Workforce Diversity Program, supports Hispanic/Latino nurses by providing scholarships for pre-entry preparation and the RN-BSN bridge program. The project also provides academic and professional mentorship and support through a collaborative partnership with the National Association of Hispanic Nurses.
