National Sickle Cell Awareness Month 2020

National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. HHS OMH.

September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. This year, OMH is raising awareness about sickle cell disease (SCD) and the growing challenges COVID-19 has had on the SCD community. OMH is also supporting HHS and Howard University's Health+ SCD Healthathon, a public innovation contest to foster ground-breaking and data-driven solutions for SCD care. Contact tracing slows the spread of COVID-19. HHS CDC. cdc.gov/coronavirus

The CDC has created a Contact Tracing webpage that includes guidance, resources for health departments, a COVIDTracer Tool, training, FAQs and a communications toolkit. The CDC has also released a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report that provides data on COVID-19 among American Indian and Alaska Native Persons - 23 States, January 31-July 3, 2020

The HHS U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has compiled a list of resources on Food Safety and COVID-19 that includes information for consumers, retail food establishments, the food service industry, food facilities and farms. Resources are available in English and Spanish.

The American Clinical Laboratory Association has released information and resources for healthcare providers on Data Reporting for COVID-19 Testing.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine invite public comments on a Discussion Draft of the Preliminary Framework for Equitable Allocation of COVID-19 Vaccine, part of a study commissioned by NIH and the CDC. The study will recommend priorities to inform allocation of a limited initial supply of COVID-19 vaccine, taking into account factors such as racial/ethnic inequities and groups at higher risk due to health status, occupation or living conditions.

Call for Nominations for the CDC Tribal Advisory Committee

The Tribal Advisory Committee (TAC) advises the CDC Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (CDC/ATSDR) on policy issues and broad strategies that may significantly affect AI/AN communities. The CDC/ATSDR TAC is currently recruiting delegates for the Bemidji area, the California area, the Great Plains area, the Phoenix area, the Tucson area and Tribes At-Large. Delegates must be elected tribal officials acting in their official capacity as elected officials of their tribe, with authority to act on behalf of the tribe and qualified to represent the views of the AI/AN tribes in the area from which they are nominated.

Maternal Mortality Campaign: Hear Her

HEAR. Know the maternal warning signs. CDC.gov.

The CDC has released the Hear Her campaign, which brings attention to maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States. Hear Her seeks to raise awareness of potentially life-threatening warning signs during and in the year after pregnancy and encourages the people supporting pregnant and postpartum women to really listen and take action when she expresses concerns. The campaign page is available in English and Spanish

Publications: First One Hundred Collection

The First One Hundred Institute, in collaboration with Unite for Literacy, has developed a collection of children's picture books created especially for AI/AN communities. The books are narrated in a variety of indigenous languages and English, providing additional support for emergent readers and speakers. The collection includes COVID-19 guides for AI/AN families.

Reducing Stroke Risk in African-American Men (TEAM2)

This randomized controlled trial, sponsored by Case Western Reserve University and the NIH National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), seeks Black/African American men ages 18-90 years old who have had a stroke or transient ischemic attack in the past 5 years. Study is to be conducted at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

Patient-Derived Xenografts to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities

This observational study, sponsored by the University of California (UC), Davis and the NIH National Cancer Institute (NCI), seeks Hispanic/Latino, Asian American, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander or Black/African American patients, ages 21-100 years old, diagnosed with bladder cancer, lung cancer, gastric/stomach cancer or liver cancer at the UC Davis Health System or contributing UC Minority PDX institutions. Study is to be conducted at the UC Irvine Health/Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center in Orange, Calif. and the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center in Sacramento, Calif.
