The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) will host a virtual symposium on September 17, 2020 to highlight state, Tribal, territorial and community-based efforts to address COVID-19 among racial and ethnic minority populations. The Advancing the Response to COVID-19: Sharing Promising Programs and Practices for Racial and Ethnic Minority Communities virtual symposium aims to support and disseminate promising practices, programs and strategies for combating COVID-19, especially in communities of color.

OMH FY2020 Funding Opportunity Announcements

OMH has released five new funding opportunity announcements (FOAs) for which applications are now being accepted. These FOAs will support projects on reducing cardiac arrest disparities, sickle cell disease (SCD) data collection, hydroxyurea prescribing for SCD, adverse childhood experiences and disparity-reducing interventions via state, Tribal and territorial partnerships.

Community-based Approaches to Strengthening Economic Supports for Working Families

OMH will provide support to low-income working families disproportionately at risk for adverse childhood experiences, including racial and ethnic minority families.

Sickle Cell Disease Clinical Data Collection Platform

OMH will support a demonstration project to determine whether a standardized clinical data collection platform can serve as a central repository for analyzing sickle cell disease data for clinical care teams and patient/family members.

The HHS Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) will establish Centers of Excellence to offer training and technical assistance for healthcare practitioners on issues related to addressing behavioral health disparities.

Demonstration to Increase Hydroxyurea Prescribing for Children with Sickle Cell Disease Through Provider Incentives

OMH will support projects to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of providing financial incentives to providers to improve the quality of life of children with sickle cell disease through increased prescription rates of hydroxyurea.

Model of the coronavirus

The CDC has published guidance on Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) and Breastfeeding. Available data suggest breastfeeding is not a likely source of transmission. 

The HHS National Institutes of Health (NIH) All of Us Research Program has developed a monthly COVID-19 Participant Experience (COPE) Survey. The survey will gather data on how the COVID-19 pandemic affects physical and mental health over time.

The HHS Administration for Children and Families (ACF) has developed the #MyStrongFamily campaign to share information on protective factors that families can draw on during difficult times to shield them from life's stresses. 

The American Psychiatric Association has created Best Practice Highlights for Treating Diverse Patient Populations. Best practice guidance is available for Black/African American, Asian, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian/Alaska Native, LGBTQ and other underserved populations.  

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) has published the results of a research project on Comparing Two Ways to Help Latino Patients with Depression Who Are Age 50 or Older. Results are available in English and Spanish.

New HIV Treatment for Patients with Limited Treatment Options

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new type of antiretroviral medication for adults living with HIV who have tried multiple HIV medications and whose HIV infection cannot be successfully treated with other therapies because of resistance, intolerance or safety considerations.

La Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos de los EE.UU. (FDA, por sus siglas en inglés) aprobó un nuevo tipo de medicamento antirretroviral para adultos que viven con VIH que han recibido múltiples medicamentos contra el VIH y cuya infección por el VIH no puede tratarse eficazmente con otras terapias debido a consideraciones de resistencia, intolerancia o seguridad.

COVID-19 Prevention Network Clinical Studies

The COVID-19 Prevention Network, formed by the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), seeks volunteers, age 18 years or older, for phase 3 vaccine and monoclonal antibody efficacy studies for the prevention of COVID-19. Volunteers must join a Volunteer Screening Registry. Study to be conducted at clinical research sites distributed throughout the United States.

Project CARE: An Integrated Treatment Adherence Program for Bipolar Disorder at the Time of Prison Release

This pilot study, sponsored by Brown University and the NIH National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), seeks volunteers age 18 years or older with a DSM-5 diagnosis of bipolar I, bipolar II, or bipolar disorder not elsewhere classified. Subjects must have an anticipated prison release within 4-10 weeks to locations anywhere in RI or to locations in other states within a 30 mile radius of Providence. Study to be conducted at the Rhode Island Department of Corrections and Brown University in Providence, RI.

Telemedicine Hack: A 10-week Learning Community to Accelerate Telemedicine Implementation for Ambulatory Providers

To support wide adoption of telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic, the HHS Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response is partnering with the ECHO Institute at the University of New Mexico and the Public Health Foundation's TRAIN Learning Network to deliver Telemedicine Hack, a free, virtual peer-to-peer learning community.
