June is Men's Health Month

The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) recognizes June as Men's Health Month, a national observance used to raise awareness about health care for men and focus on encouraging boys to practice and implement healthy living decisions. Join OMH in observing Men’s Health Week (June 15-21) to promote regular doctor visits and early treatment. As part of Men's Health WeekWear Blue Day will be celebrated on June 19 to help spread the word about the importance of disease prevention, early detection and pursuing treatment after a diagnosis. HHS Initiatives to Address the Disparate Impact of COVID-19 on African Americans and Other Racial and Ethnic Minorities

HHS has released a fact sheet that outlines some activities underway to improve prevention, testing and treatment of COVID-19 among minority populations and reduce racial and ethnic disparities. It includes information on initiatives on data collection, making treatment more accessible and affordable, tailored guidance for individuals and communities most at risk, expanding telehealth options and strengthening COVID-19 outreach and communications.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-2019)

The NIH National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has created Shareable Resources on Coping with COVID-19. Resources are available in English and Spanish.

The City of Philadelphia Mayor's Commission on African-American Males, City of Philadelphia Office of Black Male Engagement and the Center for Urban and Racial Equity have archived a webinar that discusses health disparities and the impact of COVID-19 on Black men: COVID-19 and Black Men's Physical, Mental and Spiritual Health

The Urban Indian Health Institute has developed two fact sheets on COVID-19 antibody blood tests: COVID-19 Antibody Blood Test Information for Relatives and COVID-19 Antibody Blood Test Information for Clinicians.

The National Institute for Children's Health Quality has compiled Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Information for Children's Health Advocates. Topics include pregnancy, breastfeeding, asthma and sickle cell disease.

The Milken Institute has created a living database of what actors in the food space are doing to address the effects of COVID-19 on individuals, the workforce and the food system: COVID-19 Food Response and Policy Inventory

And the Kaiser Family Foundation has published briefs on the effects of COVID-19 on communities of color: Health Disparities are a Symptom of Broader Social and Economic Inequities and Low-Income and Communities of Color at Higher Risk of Serious Illness if Infected with Coronavirus


Report: Beyond Plight: Defining Pathways to Optimal Development for Black Men and Boys Across the Life Course

The Association of Black Foundation Executives published a report that offers organizations and other stakeholders a framework of five primary protective factors that influence the development of Black male youth. These factors include culturally responsive service systems, a positive community environment, caregiver competencies, positive social networks and a positive economic environment. The report offers recommendations for organizations and other stakeholders who work with male children, adolescents, young adults and adults.

Toolkit: Responsible Fatherhood: Resources from the Field

National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse logo

The National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse, an ACF Office of Family Assistance resource center, has developed a toolkit intended for fatherhood programs. These programs help fathers create loving, nurturing relationships with their children and encourage them to be actively involved in their lives. The toolkit draws on lessons learned and resources used by fatherhood programs in diverse locales throughout the nation.

An Avatar-based Mobile Phone Intervention to Promote Health in African American MSM

This behavioral study, sponsored by the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), the NIH NIMH, the University of Mississippi Medical CenterEmory University and the Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center, seeks African American Men who have Sex with Men (MSM), age 18-34 years old, who have been prescribed ART and own a smartphone. Study to be conducted at UIC in Chicago, Ill.

Text4Father Pilot Feasibility, Acceptability Study

This behavioral study, sponsored by Johns Hopkins University and the NIH Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), seeks low-income, self-reported expectant fathers and pregnant partners, ages 18 years or older, to test a text messaging educational program. Study to be conducted at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md.

The Sickle Cell Disease Training and Mentoring Program (STAMP)

HHS OMH's STAMP is a series of free web-based trainings that covers various topics on basic sickle cell disease (SCD) care, such as preventive services (e.g. vaccinations, screenings), connecting patients with support services and community resources, best practices for co-management with hematologists, hydroxyurea initiation and follow-up, and outpatient pain management.


Tribal Behavioral Health 102: Health Issues for American Indian/Alaska Native Men

This course, offered by Tulane University as part of the TRAIN Learning Network, will examine AI/AN men's health. It will review men's specific health issues, healthcare access and utilization, social determinants of health and organizations that are working to support AI/AN men. This course will provide public health professionals with the information, skills and tools needed to better understand the specific health challenges faced by AI/AN men.
