  • HHS/Office of Minority Health (OMH), in partnership with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)Sickle Cell Disease Training and Mentoring Program (STAMP). The STAMP Program is a series of free web-based trainings for primary care providers that will cover various topics on the basics of sickle cell disease (SCD) care, such as preventive services, connecting patients with support services and community resources, best practices for co-management with hematologists, hydroxyurea initiation and follow-up, and outpatient pain management.   • HHS/OMH: Assessing Culturally Appropriate Treatment in Communities of Color: Role of Providers to Improve Quality of Care for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). This webinar will highlight the use of the National CLAS Standards to improve engagement and care of racial/ethnic minority patients with an OUD. Speakers will discuss how their population or community-specific program has improved OUD treatment by using culturally and linguistically approaches/strategies.

FDA OMHHE and Health Promotion Practice: Tobacco and Health Equity Journal Supplement. Articles are available free of charge.
  • HHS/U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Office of Minority Health and Health Equity (OMHHE), in partnership with the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE): Special journal supplement. Tobacco and Health Equity: Interventions, Research, and Strategies to Address Tobacco Use Among Diverse Populations. The FDA OMHHE and the SOPHE Health Promotion Practice journal have published a special supplement on tobacco and health equity. The supplement features 18 articles on tobacco use among diverse populations such as African Americans, Hispanics/Latinxs, American Indian/Alaska Natives and LGBTQ individuals.   • APHA Ethics Section: New publication. Public Health Code of Ethics. The APHA Public Health Code of Ethics, which has been revised since its introduction in 2002, features six core values and various factors to consider when assessing population health, including cultural, social and historical contexts.   • The American Library Association (ALA) and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation recognize January 21 as the 2020 National Day of Racial Healing. This day celebrates our common humanity and calls on everyone to take collective action toward a more just and equitable world. In commemoration, ALA invites library workers and others to visit the National Day of Racial Healing website, especially the Library Action Kit, for ideas and ways to participate. Learn more.

Opportunities for Public Comments

  • HHS/Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ): Call for Supplemental Evidence and Data (SEADs) for Treatments for Acute Pain: A Systematic Review. This systematic review will assess the comparative effectiveness of treatments and harms of opioid and non-opioid treatments for surgical and nonsurgical pain related to eight acute pain conditions, including sickle cell crisis.

Clinical Trials

  • The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), in collaboration with the NIH National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK): Observational study. Inflammation, Diabetes, Ethnicity and Obesity Cohort (IDEO). Researchers seek Hispanic/Latinx and Chinese volunteers age 25-65 years old. Study to be conducted at UCSF in San Francisco, Calif. Learn more.

  • Cyclerion Therapeutics: Clinical trial. STRONG SCD Study. Researchers seek volunteers age 16-70 years old who have been diagnosed with SCD and have had at least one pain crisis in the past year for research into an oral investigational drug. Study to be conducted at various locations throughout the United States. Learn more.  

Workforce Development

Training

  • Penn State College of Medicine: Project ECHO Medication for Opioid Use Disorder Series. Sessions support prescribing providers in their treatment of patients with OUD. Each session will include a case presentation and a brief didactic related to treatment of OUD patients. Sessions are held every other Wednesday.

  • HHS/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in partnership with the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned CorpsOpioid Rapid Response Teams (ORRT) Training Plan. State, Tribal, local and territorial health agencies can now access an ORRT training plan to support their local jurisdiction training efforts on topics such as opioid overdose epidemiology, clinical aspects of opioids, harm reduction strategies and federal agency roles. Internships / Mentoring

  • HHS/CDC, Center for State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial Support: Public Health Associate Program (PHAP). This 2-year program provides early-career public health professionals with real-life experience in the day-to-day operations of public health organizations.

  • HHS/Indian Health Service (IHS): 2020 IHS Division of Oral Health Dental Externship Program. This 5-month program is an opportunity for third-year dental students to gain clinical experience practicing in an IHS health facility, develop their clinical skills under expert supervision and contribute to an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals.

@ The Knowledge Center - Recommended Reading

The book Advancing the Science of Cancer in Latinos summarizes proceedings of a conference that examined existing scientific research about cancer health disparities that occur within Hispanic/Latino communities, connecting researchers across disciplines. It is comprised of chapters on subjects including screenings, prevention, clinical trials and survivorship. The book is open access and freely available online.
