  • HHS/National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI): Sickle Cell Science: Path to Progress webinar series. Serving the Sickle Cell Disease Community Here and Abroad. Every Wednesday in September, webinar presenters will address some of the educational and informational needs expressed by patients, family members, researchers, health care providers and others in the the sickle cell disease community. The first webinar will feature speakers Cheryl Anne Boyce (NHLBI), Dr. W. Keith Hoots (NHLBI) and Dr. Kim Smith-Whitley (Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia).

Federal Grants

  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region IX, in collaboration with the North American Development BankBorder 2020: U.S.-Mexico Border Environmental Program. Supports projects designed to protect human health and the environment in the border region, with a focus on underserved communities that may be disproportionately impacted by environmental risks.

  • HHS/NIH, National Institute on Aging (NIA): Research grant. Aging, Driving and Early Detection of Dementia (R01 Clinical Trial Optional). Supports research on automobile technology for signaling and assessing early signs of cognitive impairment in older drivers.

  • HHS/Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation (OPRE): Cooperative agreement. Family Self-Sufficiency and Stability Research Scholars Network. The goal of the Network is to support productive partnerships between social science scholars and state or local human services agencies.

  • HHS/Indian Health Service (IHS): Cooperative agreement. Office of Tribal Self-Governance Negotiation and Planning Grants. Eligibility is limited to federally-recognized American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribal governments and AI/AN Tribal organizations.

  • The Center for Sharing Public Health Services and the Public Health National Center for Innovations: Cross-Sector Innovation Initiative (CSII). Supports public health, healthcare and social services organizations striving to build stronger, sustainable connections to improve health and equity.

  • Enterprise Community PartnersAddressing Rural and Tribal Data Gaps Grant. Supports community development corporations and community housing development organizations serving rural and/or Tribal populations that are interested in or working to overcome challenges of data availability, reliability and/or sufficiency in regards to expanding housing stability for low-income people and other vulnerable populations.

  • Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)Equity-Focused Policy Research: Building Evidence on Nutrition Supports for Low-Income Families with Young Children. Supports research that advances health equity, builds the knowledge base and informs policymaking to increase access to nutrition supports and reduce nutrition disparities, including research on several federal nutrition programs such as SNAP and WIC.

  • HHS/Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Bureau of Health Workforce (BHW): New online resource. Health Professions Training Programs Dashboards. This tool displays aggregated performance data from the BHW's education and training programs for academic year 2012-2013 to present. Users can access data nationwide or by geographic area, including HHS region, state, county and congressional district. Learn more.

  • PolicyLink, in collaboration with RWJF: Report. Counting a Diverse Nation: Disaggregating Data on Race and Ethnicity to Advance a Culture of Health. This report discusses current and recommended methods for collecting and analyzing data about race and ethnicity, particularly for under-reported minorities such as Asians/Pacific Islanders and AI/AN, as well as government policies that enable and enhance data disaggregation. Opportunities for Public Comments

  • U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF): Call for comments on a Draft Recommendation Statement and two Draft Evidence Reviews on Illicit Drug Use, Including Nonmedical Use of Prescription Drugs: Screening. The Task Force found that clinicians should screen all adults for illicit drug use but more research is needed to make a recommendation for adolescents.

  • National Indian Health Board, in partnership HHS CDC: Call for interview participants for an Assistance to Tribal Nations in Building Systems of Support for Tribal Children Project. The purpose of this project is to increase the capacity of rural and non-urban Tribal communities for identifying and addressing elevated blood lead levels in AI/AN children through interviews with Tribal representatives. For further information, please contact Stephen Valliere.

Clinical Trials

  • The University of Pittsburgh, in collaboration with the Indian Health Care Resource Center of Tulsa: Behavioral study. Supporting American Indian/Alaska Native Mothers and Daughters in Reducing Gestational Diabetes Risk. Researchers seek pairs of AI/AN daughters (age 12-20 years old) at risk for gestational diabetes mellitus and their mothers or significant female caregivers (grandmother, aunt, adult sister or stepmother). Study to be conducted in Tulsa, Okla. Learn more

  • Temple University, in collaboration with the NIH National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD): Behavioral study. U01 Colorectal Cancer Project for Vietnamese Americans. Researchers seek volunteers of self-identified Vietnamese ethnicity, age 50 years or older and accessible by cell telephone. Study to be conducted at the Vietnamese Community Center of Atlantic City, NJ and the Bo De Temple in Philadelphia, Pa. Learn more.

Federal Government

  • HHS/NIH: Call for applications to the Earl Stadtman Investigators 2019-2020 Program. NIH seeks tenure-track investigators (assistant professor-equivalent) who wish to join the NIH Intramural Research Program. Applicants must have an MD, PhD, DDS/DMD, DVM, DO, RN/PhD or equivalent doctoral degree and have an outstanding record of research accomplishments as evidenced by high quality publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Community-Based Organizations / Non-Profits

  • The Cross Cultural Health Care Program: Training. Equity and Inclusion Training of Trainers. This is an interactive, 5-day institute for sponsored trainers. Attendees learn a theoretical framework of cultural competency in health and human services; become adept at teaching tangible skills necessary for providing culturally responsive care; and develop an authentic approach to disrupting inequities while preserving relationships.

@ The Knowledge Center - Recommended Reading

The issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) Recommendations and Reports titled “Prevention of Hepatitis B Virus Infection in the United States: Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices” builds on previous reports that provided immunization recommendations for people at risk of becoming infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV). The report consists of updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which discusses vaccine schedules for infants and pregnant women.
