National Immunization Awareness Month #ivax2protect
  • The HHS Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognizes August as National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). This annual observance highlights the importance of vaccination for people of all ages. For further information, including toolkits, an interactive vaccine guide and campaign materials, please visit the CDC's NIAM website.

    Learn about vaccines recommended for children from birth to 18 years of age. 

    Learn about vaccines recommended for adults 19 years or older.

Federal Grants

  • U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD): Cooperative agreement. Housing Counseling Training Grant. Supports the creation and maintenance of a housing counseling industry that assists consumers by providing them with information to make informed housing choices, including courses that provide training to counselors in the areas of disaster preparation and recovery.

  • HHS/Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ): Grant. Advancing Patient Safety Implementation through Safe Medication Use Research (R18). Eligibility is limited to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribal organizations, federally-recognized AI/AN Tribal governments and state governments.

  • HHS/Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA): Grant. Health Center Program's Service Area Competition. Supports public and private nonprofit, community-based and patient-directed organizations that provide primary health care services to medically-underserved populations.

  • HHS/HRSA, Maternal and Child Health Bureau: Cooperative agreement. Advancing State and Urban Maternal and Child Health. Eligibility is open to any domestic public or private entity, including AI/AN Tribes and Tribal, faith-based or community-based organizations.

  • Firehouse Subs Public Safety FoundationFirst Responder Grants. Provides lifesaving equipment and prevention education tools to fire departments, law enforcement, EMS, non-profits, public safety organizations and schools.

  • Robert Wood Johnson FoundationBuilding Capacity to Reduce Tobacco Inequities in the South and Midwest. Supports organizations working with and representing Black, lower-income and/or rural residents in the following 13 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.

  • Seattle Indian Health Board/Urban Indian Health InstituteBRANCH: Building Resiliency and Action to Nurture Community Health - 2019-2020 Community Grants Program. Supports the use of AI/AN traditional, cultural and regional knowledge in developing, implementing and/or supporting cancer education, prevention, management and survivorship initiatives among urban Indian communities.

  • American Pharmacists Association FoundationIncentive Grants for Practitioner Innovation in Pharmaceutical Care. Supports research and demonstration projects that highlight new and emerging innovations in patient care related to community pharmacy practice, including innovations in immunization practices.

  • Medical Library Association (MLA)MLA Scholarship for Minority Students. Awards funds to minority students entering a health sciences graduate program at an American Library Association-accredited library school.

  • Food Research & Action Center, in collaboration with the National WIC Association, Feeding America and the Protecting Immigrant Families CampaignImmigrant Families' Access to Nutrition: Threats and Strategies to Push Back. Speakers will discuss actions that anti-hunger advocates, nutrition providers and food banks can take to address nutrition, health and well-being among immigrant families.

  • State Health Access Data Assistance Center (SHADAC): The Evolving Opioid Crisis: Observing the Changes in the Opioid Epidemic through State-level Data. Speakers will examine the U.S. opioid epidemic through national and state-level data on drug overdose deaths from the use of opioids such as prescription painkillers, heroin, synthetic opioids and non-opioids such as cocaine and psychostimulants.

  • Merck Sharp & Dohme: Health campaign. America's Diabetes Challenge: Get to Your Goals. This health promotion program urges people with type 2 diabetes to work with their doctor to set and reach their A1C (average blood glucose over the past 2-3 months) goal, as well as to learn the signs and symptoms of low blood glucose and how to help reduce their risk. The campaign is available in English and Spanish. Learn more.

Opportunities for Public Comments

  • U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)/Food & Nutrition Service (FNS): Call for comments on a Proposed Rule Making, Revision of Categorical Eligibility in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The proposed rule would change SNAP broad-based categorical eligibility state options and use a higher gross income test, which could impact SNAP benefits for 3.1 million people and potentially remove 500,000 children from automatic eligibility for free school meals.

  • National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA): Call for submissions of original research articles, reviews, case reports, evidence-based medicine synopses or letters to the editors to The Journal of NHMA. To submit a manuscript, please use NHMA's online system, then email your manuscript, full name and the title of your manuscript to journal@nhmamd.org.

Clinical Trials

  • Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in collaboration with the CDC, Duke University and the Children's Hospital Medical Center: Phase 4 clinical trial. Safety of Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine (LAIV4) in Children with Asthma. Researchers seek children ages 5-11 years old with a current diagnosis of persistent asthma. Parent(s) or legal guardian(s) must provide written, informed consent and participants must provide assent as appropriate for age. Study to be conducted at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC, the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio and the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.   • The University of Miami, in collaboration with the NIH National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD): Behavioral study. HoMBReS (Hispanic Men Building Respect, Education, and Safety within Families / Hombres Manteniendo Respeto, Educación y Seguridad de Familia). Researchers seek Hispanic/Latino male or male-identifying farmworkers age 18 years or older who understand and speak Spanish and have at least one 13-17 year old son for an HIV behavioral intervention designed to reduce substance abuse, family violence and HIV/AIDS among seasonal farmworkers in rural areas. @ The Knowledge Center - Recommended Reading

The report Ranking Vaccines - A Prioritization Framework: Phase I: Demonstration of Concept and a Software Blueprint, published by The National Academies Press, describes a model developed by the Institute of Medicine for understanding the significance of new and existing vaccines. The paper considers numerous factors that can impact vaccine prioritization, including policies, economics, health, public concerns, demographics and science. It describes the beta version of the software Strategic Multi-Attribute Ranking Tool for Vaccines, or SMART Vaccines, created from the Institute’s model to guide the decisions of stakeholders.
