National Health Center Week, August 4-10, 2019 #NHCW19 #ValueCHCs
  • HHS, the National Association of Community Health Centers and the Health Center Advocacy Network recognize August 4-10 as National Health Center Week (NHCW) with the theme, "America's Health Centers: Rooted in Communities." During NHCW the focus turns to raising awareness about the mission and accomplishments of health centers and the services they have provided daily in racial and ethnic minority communities over the past five decades.

Federal Grants

  • HHS/Administration for Community Living (ACL): Grant. Disability and Rehabilitation Research Projects (DRRP) Program: Independent Living Transition Services for Youth and Young Adults with Significant Disabilities from Minority Backgrounds. Eligibility is limited to minority-serving public, state-controlled or private institutions of higher education, federally-recognized Tribal governments and Tribal organizations.

  • U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)/Food and Nutrition Service: Cooperative agreement. WIC Breastfeeding Support Campaign. This opportunity is open to accredited college/university, private or public non-profit or for profit research institutions or organizations with experience in implementing and evaluating marketing campaigns.

  • HHS/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Cooperative agreement. Tuberculosis Elimination and Laboratory Cooperative Agreement. Eligibility is limited to county, city/township or state governments, including the territorial governments of Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • Santa Barbara Foundation: 2019 Food Grant Program. Supports California, Santa Barbara County-based programs that directly address food insecurity by providing grants for operating expenses and/or costs related to sustaining or expanding service delivery programs.

  • Western Reserve Health Foundation: Community Health Grant Program. Supports Ohio, Mahoning County-serving projects that address healthy eating/active living, infant mortality and birth outcome inequality, diabetes, substance use disorders and health inequities.

  • Foundation for Opioid Response EffortsImproving Access to Opioid Use Disorder Treatment and Recovery Services for Underserved Populations and Communities. Supports projects that improve and reform the continuum of care, provide wraparound social services and address other areas necessary to facilitate access to high-quality, patient-centered treatment.

Scholarships / Fellowships

  • American Public Health AssociationPublic Health Fellowship in Government. Fellows will have the option of working in the House or Senate on legislative and policy issues such as creating healthy communities, improving health equity, addressing environmental health concerns, population health or the social determinants of health.

  • Institute for Healthcare Improvement: Black Women and Maternal Care: Redesigning for Safety, Dignity, and Respect. This webinar will address the significant rise in maternal deaths in the United States, especially among black women, and will feature speakers from organizations that have partnered with patients and trusted community groups to design solutions for more respectful, dignified pregnancy experiences.

Florida Conference on Aging, August 19-21, 2019, Hyatt Regency, Orlando
  • The Florida Council on Aging and the Florida Chapter of the National Association of Social Work: Registration is open for the 2019 Florida Conference on Aging. This conference will address issues such as the design of age-friendly communities, memory disorders, nutrition and food insecurity, and the use of technology to expand access to senior services and programs.

Capacity Building

  • National League of Cities (NLC): Call for proposals for the Healthy Housing City Leaders' Forum. Through this 18-month technical assistance initiative, NLC will support cities in implementing policies, programs and practices that improve housing quality and health.

  • Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF): Toolkit. Health Care Rights Law #LanguageAccessNow Campaign. In response to the CMS call for comments on a proposed revision of Section 1557 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, APIAHF has developed a campaign designed to raise awareness of the proposed rule's impact on health care rights protections for limited-English-speaking families and immigrant communities. The deadline for submitting comments to CMS is August 13.

  • Cleveland Clinic: New resource. Healthy Brains. This website is an interactive platform designed to provide individualized brain health assessment tools, lifestyle tips and medical news on the prevention, early detection and treatment for brain disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. The site is available in English and Spanish. Learn more.

WABA: World Breastfeeding Week 2019, Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding
  • HHS and Prevent Blindness recognize August as Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month. Healthy vision contributes to children's school readiness, ability to learn, overall healthy development and ability to reach motor developmental milestones. Learn more about vision screening and eye care essentials at Prevent Blindness' National Center for Children's Vision and Eye Health, as well as the HHS National Institutes of Health (NIH)'s National Eye Institute (NEI) for Kids.  

Opportunities for Public Comments

  • HHS/Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE): Request for Information (RFI) on Ensuring Patient Access and Effective Drug Enforcement. This RFI seeks comments on ensuring legitimate access to controlled substances, including opioids, while also preventing diversion and abuse, as well as how federal, state, local and Tribal entities can collaborate to address these issues.

Clinical Trials

  • Michigan State University, in collaboration with the NIH Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the Henry Ford Health System: Behavioral study. Breastfeeding Support and Weight Management for Black Women (MamaBear). Researchers seek pregnant, African American women, age 18 years and older, who intend to breastfeed. Study to be conducted at the New Center One Women's Clinic in Detroit, Mich. Learn more.

  • RTI International, in collaboration with the NIH NICHD, Temple University and Christiana Care Health Services: Behavioral study. BOOST: Breastfeeding Onset and Onward with Support Tools. Researchers seek mothers age 18-44 years old, who are willing to initiate or have initiated breastfeeding, are WIC-enrolled or eligible to enroll in WIC services, and reside and plan to stay in the study county for 12 months postpartum. Study to conducted at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. Learn more.

  • HHS/HRSA, Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB)Division of Maternal and Child Health Workforce Development Internship. HRSA is accepting applications for Winter/Spring Internships from graduate students in good standing at schools of public health or other health-related training programs in the United States.

@ The Knowledge Center - Recommended Reading

The booklet Blood and Marrow Stem Cell Transplantation Guide is a consumer publication from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society that explains the processes involved with stem cell transplantation for the treatment of leukemia and other forms of blood cancers. It describes side effects that can occur as a result of the treatment, suggestions for post-transplant care, and a glossary of relevant health terms.
