  • The May-June supplemental issue of Public Health Reports features an article by Juliet Bui, Minh Wendt and Alexis Bakos of the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH): Understanding and Addressing Health Disparities and Health Needs of Justice-Involved Populations.

    Articles in this supplement examine the health of the justice-involved population and their families, propose policies and interventions to address their health needs, assess how population health surveys can provide better information about the justice-involved population and identify opportunities for bridging knowledge gaps on health disparities and health needs.

National Minority Donor Awareness Week: We're all needed
  • The HHS Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) recognizes August 1-7 as National Minority Donor Awareness Week. This observance seeks to heighten awareness of the need for donation and transplantation within minority communities. HRSA invites you to learn about organ, eye and tissue donation and why we're all needed. To learn more and to sign up visit OrganDonor.gov or DonacionDeOrganos.gov.

  • HHS/HRSA, Bureau of Primary Health Care: Grant. Health Center Program's Service Area Competition. Supports public and private nonprofit, community-based and patient-directed organizations that provide primary health care services to medically-underserved populations.

  • HHS/National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Solicitation. Small Business Innovation Research Program. NIH and CDC are soliciting proposals from small businesses that possess the research and development expertise to conduct research that will contribute toward NIH or CDC mission needs.

  • HHS/HRSA: Grant. Rural Health Network Development Planning Program. Supports the development of an integrated health care network, specifically with network participants who do not have a history of formal collaborative efforts, in order to strengthen the rural health care system as a whole.

  • St. David's FoundationParks with Purpose - Parks for Health and Equity Grant. Supports the expansion, renovation and promotion of parks in the Texas counties of Bastrop, Caldwell and Travis, with the goal of leveraging the power of parks to improve community health.

Scholarships / Fellowships

  • The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Health and the David Geffen School of Medicine: 2020-2021 LGBTQ Healthcare Fellowship Program. This fellowship is designed to train future primary care physicians to be sensitive, comfortable, clinically knowledgeable and culturally competent in delivering healthcare to sexual gender minority populations.

@ The Knowledge Center - Recommended Reading

The book Mental Disorders and Disabilities Among Low-Income Children evaluates trends pertaining to children with mental disorders and children who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. It provides background on the SSI program, as well as on six common mental disorders: attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, mood disorders, autism spectrum disorder, oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder, intellectual disability, and learning disabilities. The book also summarizes the current state of diagnosis of and treatment for children with one or more of these conditions.
