  • June is Men's Health Month. This month is dedicated to helping men take necessary steps toward better health such as early detection and treatment of disease and injuries and preventative care.

    June 10-14 is set aside as Men's Health Week and is dedicated to scheduling events that will help raise awareness about the health challenges men face and the factors contributing to their shorter life expectancy. As part of Men's Health Week, Wear Blue Day will be celebrated on June 14, as an opportunity for organizations and individuals to help spread the word about the importance of disease prevention, early detection and pursuing treatment after a diagnosis.

Funding

Federal Grants

  • HHS/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Cooperative agreement. Capacity Building for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Surveillance. Supports the creation of a population-based surveillance system that will allow for the identification of individuals with SCD and the standardized collection of information about their clinical history.

  • Department of Justice (DOJ)/Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP): Grant. Specialized Services and Mentoring for Child and Youth Victims of Sex Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation. Supports the efforts of organizations to develop or enhance their mentoring capacity, facilitate outreach efforts and increase the availability of direct services for child and youth victims of commercial sexual exploitation and domestic sex trafficking.

  • HHS/National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH): Research grant. Engaging Men in HIV Testing, Prevention, and Care (R01 Clinical Trial Optional). Supports the development and testing of strategies to increase the engagement of men in HIV prevention and care within populations who have evidenced lower rates of engagement and retention in HIV prevention and care.

  • Arnold Ventures and the CUNY Institute for State and Local GovernanceReducing Revocations Challenge. Supports the creation of Action Research Teams that will conduct in-depth research and data analysis on the drivers of probation failures, and identify policy and practice solutions that will reduce the failures of supervision that contribute to mass incarceration.

  • American Psychological FoundationMarian R. Stuart Grant. Funds research, practice or education of an early career psychologist on the connection between mental and physical health, particularly for work that contributes to public health.

Loan Repayment

  • HHS/Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)National Health Service Corps Rural Community Loan Repayment Program. Eligibility is limited to health care providers working in rural communities who use evidence-based treatment models to treat substance use disorders, including opioid misuse.

Join UIHI Scientific Director, Adrian Dominguez, who will discuss how racial misclassification and limited analysis have excluded American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations from health assessments and community conversations. This webinar will also provide training on ways to improve capturing AI/AN race in health data.

  • Johns Hopkins University, in collaboration with the University of Maryland and the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI): Behavioral study. Sleep and Pain in Sickle Cell Disease. Researchers seek volunteers age 18 years or older with a diagnosis of a sickle cell hemoglobinopathy. Study to be conducted at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD. Learn more.

@ The Knowledge Center - Recommended Reading

In observance of Men's Health Month, the Knowledge Center recommends the booklet "Men and Depression," which is also available in Spanish as "Los hombres y la depresión." Published by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), this consumer-friendly document describes types of depression, causes, symptoms and common ways they manifest in men. It discusses treatment options and other resources for people dealing with depression as well as suggestions on how their loved ones can support them.
