Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month Twitter Chat, Wednesday, May 29, 2019, 2-3 pm ET. #AAPIHealthChat.

The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) will host a Twitter chat today, May 29, 2 pm ET to recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The chat will focus on diabetes health disparities in the Asian American and Pacific Islander community and the impact an active and healthy lifestyle can have on health outcomes. Use #AAPIHealthChat to participate.

Funding

Federal Grants

  • HHS/Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation (OPRE): Grant. Family Strengthening Scholars. Supports dissertation research on healthy marriage/responsible fatherhood policy. It is intended to address issues of significance to inform policy decisions and solutions, particularly for underserved populations such as low-income families and minority populations.
    Deadline for Letters of Intent is June 10. Learn more.

  • U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT)/Federal Transit Administration (FTA): Grant. Bus and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Program. Provides assistance to finance buses and bus facilities capital projects, including replacing, rehabilitating, purchasing, or leasing buses or bus-related facilities. Eligibility is limited to state, county, city/township and federally recognized Tribal governments.  
    Deadline is June 21. Learn more.

  • HHS/Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA): Grant. Health Center Program Service Area Competition. Provides grants to health centers that offer comprehensive primary healthcare services to an underserved area or population. Eligibility is limited to areas with a January 1, 2020 project period start date.

Non-Federal Grants

  • Colorado Health FoundationSupporting Healthy Minds and Youth Resiliency. Eligible applicants include Colorado-based community-based organizations or public agencies that engage youth in safe, supportive and culturally responsive environments that work to enhance social-emotional skills.
    Deadline is June 15. Learn more.

  • Pride Foundation: Community Grants Program. Supports community organizations that are working to improve the lives and address the needs of LGBTQ youth, adults and families in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington state.

Scholarships / Fellowships

  • Weingart Foundation: John W. Mack Movement Building Fellows Program. Selected fellows will receive leadership development training, peer learning and coaching support. Eligibility is limited to individuals employed at Los Angeles County nonprofit organizations involved in social justice and racial equity campaigns.

  • Korean American Scholarship Foundation (KASF)KASF Scholarship. Eligible candidates include Korean American students and, in select regions, descendants of American veterans that served during the Korean War.

Challenges 

  • Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and Catalyst @ Health 2.0Social Determinants of Health Innovation Challenge - Phase I. This challenge invites submissions of digital technology solutions to help providers and/or patients connect to services related to social determinants of health.

Opportunities for Public Comments

  • Data Across Sectors for Health, in partnership with All In: Data for Community Health: Call for participation in the 2019 National Inventory of Data Sharing Collaborations for Health survey. Contributions will inform a national analysis of community partnerships that are systematically sharing data across sectors to drive population health improvement. The results will highlight opportunities to advance a common agenda that can help support and expand this crucial work. Learn more.

Clinical Trials

  • U.S. Department of veterans Affairs (VA)/Office of Research and Development: Behavioral study. A Novel Strategy to Decrease Fall Incidence Post-Stroke. Researchers seek veterans age 18-85 years old with a diagnosis of unilateral stroke for a study on a new treatment approach, backward walking training. Study to be conducted at the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System in Gainesville, FL. Learn more.

@ The Knowledge Center - Recommended Reading

The book Contemporary Clinical Practice with Asian Immigrants: A Relational Framework with Culturally Responsive Approaches presents models for evaluating help-seeking behaviors and applying cultural competence to such models. It explores population demographics of Asian immigrants in countries around the globe, in addition to covering several topics in behavioral health, including family dynamics and suicide interventions.
