The booklet Sickle Cell Trait and Other Hemoglobinopathies and Diabetes: Important Information for Providers, NIH Publication No. 14-6287 describes hemoglobin variants that correlate with the sickle cell trait and with diabetes in different racial and ethnic groups. Some African Americans have both sickle cell and diabetes trait variants that interfere with certain tests used to monitor diabetes. This document explains how to interpret test results to ensure blood diseases are not overlooked or misdiagnosed.
