  • HHS/Office of Minority Health (OMH)Youth Health Equity Model of Practice (YHEMOP) Summer 2019 Health Equity Fellowship. Through its YHEMOP program, OMH places students enrolled in higher education studies into short-term health equity fellowships to help meet the needs of diverse organizations.   • HHS/OMH: Webinar. Holistic Health and Sickle Cell Disease: A Focus on Mental and Behavioral Health. This webinar will discuss the various aspects of mental and behavioral health in sickle cell disease patients, as well as a holistic approach to treatment. Presenters will share information on the mental health disparities that exist among sickle cell patients and ways that health care providers can work to address them.

  • US Department of Justice (DOJ)/Office on Violence Against Women: Grant. Tribal Sexual Assault Services Program. Eligibility is limited to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribal organizations (other than federally recognized Tribal governments) and AI/AN Tribal governments (Federally recognized).

  • HHS/National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH): Research Project Grant. Addressing the Role of Violence on HIV Care and Viral Suppression (R01 Clinical Trial Optional).
    Deadline for Letter of Intent (LOI) is March 10. Learn more

  • HHS/Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA): Grant. Garrett Lee Smith State/Tribal Youth Suicide Prevention and Early Intervention Grant Program. Supports states and tribes with implementing youth suicide prevention and early intervention strategies in schools, educational institutions, juvenile justice systems, substance use programs, mental health programs, foster care systems, and other child and youth-serving organizations.

  • HHS/SAMHSA, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention: Grant. Strategic Prevention Framework - Partnerships for Success. The purpose of this grant program is to prevent the onset and reduce the progression of underage drinking among persons aged 9-20 and its related problems while strengthening prevention capacity and infrastructure at the community level.

  • Kent Richard Hofmann FoundationHIV and AIDS Grants. Supports developing or established programs on HIV/AIDS care and direct services, education, or research.

  • Institute of Museum and Library ServicesNative American Library Services - Basic Grants. Supports existing Tribal library operations and the maintenance of core library services, including health education and promotion programs or collections.

  • The HHS/NIH, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) recognizes February as American Heart Month. This year's theme, “Our hearts are healthier together,” encourages individuals to join with others to make lifestyle changes that are heart-healthy and long-lasting. NHLBI encourages everyone to use #OurHearts on social media to share what you and your friends, family, and coworkers are doing to get heart healthy together. Learn more.

  • American Public Health Association: Special issue of the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH), "New Perspectives to Advance Minority Health and Health Disparities Research." In this special supplement, funded by the HHS NIH National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), AJPH presents research and perspectives focused on expanding methodological approaches to monitor and reduce health disparities for minority populations.   • HHS/NIH, Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR): Request for information on the Revised Definition of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research at NIH. OBSSR seeks to update the original 1996 definition in order to improve NIH's ability to describe, assess and monitor NIH BSSR funding.

Clinical Trials

  • Duke University, in collaboration with the HHS Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ): Observational study. Disseminating NIH Evidence Based Sickle Cell Recommendations in North Carolina. Patients with a diagnosis of sickle cell disease (not trait) are eligible for inclusion. Additionally, we will survey primary care and emergency department clinicians. Patients must be from North Carolina or Georgetown, South Carolina. Clinicians must practice in NC or SC. Study to be conducted at Community Care of North Carolina in Raleigh, NC. Learn more.

Workforce Development

Training

  • HHS/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Public Health Associate Program (PHAP). This is a two-year, paid training program. PHAP associates are assigned to public health agencies and nongovernmental organizations in the United States and U.S. territories, including Tribal health departments and organizations.

  • The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) Partnership for Tribal Governance: Tribal Workforce Development Strategic Planning Initiative. NCAI will provide two Tribal nations and/or Native organizations across eight states (IA, ID, MN, MT, ND, OR, SD and WA) the opportunity to design and implement strategic plans for their workforce development approaches.

@ The Knowledge Center - Recommended Reading

In observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on February 7, the Knowledge Center recommends the book Our Communities, Our Sexual Health: Awareness and Prevention for African Americans, 4th ed. It details the intensity of the HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infection (STI) epidemics on the Black community and how these health conditions have been addressed over time. The book also includes commentary in the introduction from the former Surgeon General of the United States, David Satcher.
