  • The HHS/Office of Minority Health (OMH) is excited to announce that the Youth Health Equity Model of Practice (YHEMOP) Summer 2019 Health Equity Fellow application is now available. Through its YHEMOP program, OMH places students enrolled in higher education studies into short-term health equity fellowships to help meet the needs of diverse organizations.   • US Public Health Service Commissioned Officers Foundation (PHS COF)Public Health Barclay-Giel Seed Grants. Areas of prime interest are opioids and addiction, tobacco, community health and economic prosperity, health and national security, oral health, and emerging public health threats.

  • HHS/Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA): Grant. Innovations in Care Coordination for Children and Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Other Developmental Disabilities Program.

  • HHS/HRSA: Health Center Program Grant. New Access Points. Provides operational support for new service delivery sites to expand access to affordable, accessible, quality, and cost effective primary health care services for the underserved.

Non-Federal Grants

  • Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples: Thriving Women Program, Land Defenders and Water Protectors Program, and Mini Grants. These grants support initiatives in culturally competent Tribal health services, including violence against American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) women and environmental health.

  • Robert Wood Johnson FoundationCulture of Health Leaders. Through this program, professionals in health and other varied fields will be prepared to collaborate and provide leadership to address health equity in their communities.

Scholarships / Fellowships 

  • The HIV League: 2019 Scholarship. Eligibility is limited to students living with HIV who are either currently or going to be enrolled in college or university for at least one year.

  • Georgetown University School of Medicine2019 Dean of Medical Education's Academy for Research, Clinical, and Health Equity Scholarship (ARCHES). This program is open to current undergraduate sophomores and juniors interested in pursuing medical studies. Chosen students will spend a summer shadowing physicians, engaging in independent research, and learning about health equity in the Washington, DC area.

Healthy Brain Initiative (HBI) Road Map. Speakers will present a national overview of the newly-released HBI Road Map, how it was developed, and current approaches for distribution and implementation.

Presenters will discuss the process of identifying birth outcomes disparities among Pacific Islanders. They will also highlight the It Takes a Village program, which raises awareness about birth outcomes disparities in the context of Pacific Islander cultural beliefs and practices.

  • Rainbow Elder Care of Greater Dayton: Registration is open for the Miami Valley LGBT Horizons of Aging Summit. This inaugural event will address healthcare and social justice issues for LGBT older adults.

  • National Indian Health Board (NIHB): Call for proposals for the 10th Annual National Tribal Public Health Summit. NIHB encourages presentations highlighting evidence-based, best, wise, or promising practices developed in and for Tribal communities.

Opportunities for Public Comments

  • HHS/National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR): Call for comments on the Surgeon General's 2020 Report on Oral Health. Interested persons or organizations are invited to submit written views on oral health, including the importance of poor oral health as a public health issue, contemporary issues affecting oral health, and new knowledge that may transform the oral health of the nation.

Clinical Trials

  • Montefiore Medical Center, in collaboration with the HHS Food and Drug Administration (FDA): Phase II study. Topical Sodium Nitrite in Sickle Cell Disease and Leg Ulcers. Researchers seek volunteers age 18 or older who have a diagnosis of sickle cell disease and have one or more ulcers on their legs or feet. Study to be conducted at the Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY and the University of Pittsburgh in PA. Learn more

  • US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)/Office of Research and Development: Early Phase 1 study. Communication and Activation in Pain to Enhance Relationships and Treat Pain With Equity (COOPERATE). VA researchers seek Black or African American veterans who have had musculoskeletal pain in the low back, cervical spine, or extremities (hip, knee, shoulder) for three months. Study to be conducted at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, IN. Learn more.

The Racial Divide in American Medicine: Black Physicians and the Struggle for Justice in Health Care is a book that details the history of efforts to create equity in health care and health professions across the south and throughout the United States. The book describes events, along with timelines, such as slave hospitals, Reconstruction-era health, the struggles of black physicians and the desegregation of medicine during the civil rights movement, in addition to present day issues.
