They will also highlight the It Takes a Village program, which raises awareness about birth outcomes disparities in the context of Pacific Islander cultural beliefs and practices.

  • HHS/National Institutes of Health (NIH)Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23 Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed). Supports the career development of individuals with a clinical doctoral degree who focus their work on patient-oriented research.

  • HHS/NIH, National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA): Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Grant. Mobile Technologies Extending Reach of Primary Care for Substance-Use-Disorders (R43/R44 Clinical Trial Optional). Funds the development and testing of a prototype mobile/tablet technology-based application suitable for primary care settings and which can be used to deliver feedback to patients following up on substance use interventions.

  • HHS/NIHResearch Enhancement Award Program (REAP) for Health Professional Schools and Graduate Schools (R15 Clinical Trial Not Allowed). Supports small-scale research projects proposed by faculty members of eligible, domestic institutions to expose undergraduate and/or graduate students to meritorious research projects.

  • HHS/Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA): Grant. Suicide Prevention Lifeline Crisis Center Follow-Up Expansion Program. Eligibility is limited to National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Crisis Centers.

Clinical Trials

  • HHS/NIH, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI): Phase I study. Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Collection for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Patients. NIH researchers seek SCD patients age 18-99 years old who planned to enroll in an active allogeneic hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) transplant study where back-up autologous HSCs are needed or are eligible for an allogeneic HSCT study but no active study is available. NHLBI study to be conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. Learn more.

  • GlaxoSmithKline (GSK): Phase III study. Safety and Immunogenicity of GSK Meningococcal Group B Vaccine and 13-valent Pneumococcal Vaccine when Administered Concomitantly with Routine Vaccines to Healthy Infants. GSK researchers seek infants 6-12 weeks of age. Written informed consent must be obtained from infants' parents or legally acceptable representatives prior to performing any study specific procedure. Workforce Development

  • State University of New York/Downstate Medical Center: Summer Institute. Program to Increase Diversity among Individuals Engaged in Cardiovascular Health-Related Research (PRIDE-CVD). This NHLBI-funded research program seeks to increase the number of scientists and research-oriented faculty from ethnic groups currently under-represented in science who successfully compete for external funding for scientific research in the biomedical and behavioral sciences in cardiovascular-health related topics.

The report Why Minority Eye Health Still Matters: A Call for Current - and Future - Eyecare Professionals to be Culturally Competent summarizes discussions from the National Optometric Association 2017 annual meeting. It examines how conditions like glaucoma and diabetic eye disease disproportionately impact Hispanics and African Americans. The document provides suggestions for outreach, such as bilingual resources, to encourage regular visits to eyecare professionals.
