Native American Heritage Month Highlighted AI/AN Health Challenges
November marked Native American Heritage Month—a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, histories, and invaluable contributions of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people in the United States. This observance also is a time to reflect on how this heritage intersects with health, raise awareness about the health challenges that AI/AN communities face, and identify ways tribal members have worked to address these challenges. November was National Diabetes Month
National Diabetes Month is observed every year in November to raise awareness of diabetes prevention, diagnosis, and management. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), diabetes is the number one cause of kidney failure, lower-limb amputations, and blindness, and is the seventh-leading cause of death in the US. This year's theme for National Diabetes Month was gestational diabetes, a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. In the OMH cross-posted blog post, Health Literacy: Why it Matters for Minority Health and Disparities, a researcher in the Division of Intramural Research at the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) discusses the importance of health literacy for minority health and promoting health equity. She describes the link between health literacy and health, and strategies to improve health communications with diverse populations.
In the OMH blog post, Menominee Youth Empowerment Program: Fun, with Purpose, the coordinator of the Menominee Youth Empowerment Program (MYEP) highlights this HHS OMH Youth Empowerment Program grantee. A pilot program on the Menominee tribe’s reservation, MYEP has helped to promote academic achievement and healthy behavior for at-risk Indian youth. To learn more about MYEP, visit here.

US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) FY2019 Farm to School Grants aim to increase healthy, local, and culturally appropriate food and food nutrition education within schools. NIHB, in partnership with CDC: Tribal Health Systems Enhancement for Cancer Screening Award funds participation in a second round of pilot testing of a toolkit developed by NIHB. University of Michigan: National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) Scholar-in-Residence Program: This new NCID initiative is available to mid-career and senior diversity scholars interested in spending an academic year at the University of Michigan. NCID Scholars-in-Residence will have the opportunity to pursue their research and writing while actively engaging in their vibrant intellectual community that includes junior faculty and postdoctoral fellows, senior NCID faculty fellows, graduate students, and colleagues in affiliated academic units. Scholars-in-Residence will need the support of a department chair at the University of Michigan and will receive a stipend during their term of residence in Ann Arbor. Deadline is December 17. This factsheet can be used to present outputs from CDC's STD Prevention Allocation Consequences Estimator in an accessible format that can be customized with an organization's logo and local data to describe the health impacts of STD program budget changes in a particular jurisdiction. Association of American Indian Physicians (AAIP): The report Promising Practices to Build Healthy Active Native Communities reflects on the AAIP evaluation on how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Winnable Battles health education program can be adapted for American Indian/Alaska Native communities. The report outlines the process of implementing the program, from selecting organizations to participate as community partners and identifying the goals for each project, to impacts, challenges, and lessons learned.
HHS and the NIH National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK): Use the following toolkit to share the 2018 theme of National Diabetes Month, Promoting Health After Gestational Diabetes, and to raise awareness among women with a history of gestational diabetes about their lifelong risk for developing diabetes.
