  • HHS recognizes November as National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month. For further information, including clinical trials, current research and resources for healthcare professionals, please visit Alzheimers.gov or the HHS Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s Healthy Aging Program and Healthy Brain Initiative.   

Funding

Federal Grants

  • HHS/National Institutes of Health (NIH)Time-Sensitive Obesity Policy and Program Evaluation (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) Grant. All applications submitted to this FOA must demonstrate that the evaluation of an obesity related policy and/or program offers an uncommon and scientifically compelling research opportunity that will only be available if the research is initiated with minimum delay.

  • HHS/Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)Healthy Transitions: Improving Life Trajectories for Youth and Young Adults with Serious Mental Disorders Program. Eligibility is limited to state, tribal or territorial agencies that oversee delivery of mental health services to youth (16-25) with serious mental disorders.

Non-Federal Grants

  • National Indian Health Board (NIHB), in partnership with CDCClimate Ready Tribes (CRT) Initiative. NIHB will offer a CRT Initiative Award for Tribes to conduct local work related to climate health. NIHB will also offer a CRT Initiative Mini-Award for Climate and Health Communication for Tribes to conduct low-cost, local work including climate health outreach, educational or training opportunities.

  • NIHB, in partnership with CDCTribal Health Systems Enhancement for Cancer Screening Award. Funds participation in a second round of pilot testing of a toolkit developed by NIHB. This toolkit has been designed specifically for Tribal health systems interested in increasing high-quality, population-based breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screenings.

  • Foundation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry/Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children2019-2020 Access to Care Grants. Supports community-based initiatives that provide dental care to underserved children.

  • National Kidney Foundation2019 Young Investigator Research Grant Program. Awards grants to individuals who have completed their fellowship training and who hold junior faculty positions at a university-affiliated medical center for research in the field of nephrology or a related discipline.

Scholarships / Fellowships

  • American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR): Irene Diamond Fund/AFAR Postdoctoral Transition Awards in Aging Program. Provides two-year fellowships to senior postdoctoral fellows as they develop and negotiate for junior faculty appointments and independent research programs.

  • National Academy of Medicine (NAM): Culture of Health webinar. Defining and Unpacking the Social Determinants of Health and Health Equity. Join NAM for a webinar where field leaders will explore the meanings of both social determinants of health and health equity and what it means to apply these terms to enact change in the real world.
    November 29, 4:00 pm ET. Register.  

Resources

  • HHS and the NIH National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) recognize November as National Diabetes Month. Use the following toolkit to share the 2018 theme, Promoting Health After Gestational Diabetes, and to raise awareness among women with a history of gestational diabetes about their lifelong risk for developing diabetes.

  • In honor of Native American Heritage Month, the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB) is highlighting the Honor Native Lands initiative. For further information on the initiative, please see the US Department of Arts and Culture's Honor Native Land: A Guide and Call to Acknowledgement. NPAIHB is also hosting a We R Native monthly contest for American Indian/Alaska Native youth. To participate, youth must submit a photo of their home, land or community and share it on social media using #HonorNativeLands and #weRnative by November 20.

Clinical Trials

  • The University of Southern California, in collaboration with the US Department of Defense, the Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research Center, the Northern California Institute of Research and Education, the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Alzheimer's Therapeutic Research Institute: Observational study. A Study of Brain Aging in Vietnam War Veterans (DOD-ADNI). The purpose of this study is to examine the possible connections between traumatic brain injury and PTSD, and the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease on veterans as they age. Researchers seek Vietnam War veterans age 50-90 years old. Study to be conducted at the University of California, San Francisco, CA. Learn more.

The report Promising Practices to Build Healthy Active Native Communities reflects on the Association of American Indian Physicians (AAIP) evaluation on how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Winnable Battles health education program can be adapted for American Indian/Alaska Native communities. The report outlines the process of implementing the program, from selecting organizations to participate as community partners and identifying the goals for each project, to impacts, challenges, and lessons learned.
