  • The report Why Minority Eye Health Still Matters, subtitled A Call for Current - and Future - Eyecare Professionals to be Culturally Competent, examines the systemic health conditions both eyecare students and professionals should consider when treating minorities. The document condenses the discussion that occurred during the “Minority Eye Health Matters” panel at the National Optometric Association 2017 annual convention. It highlights how glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and high blood pressure disproportionately impact the two largest minority groups in the United States, Hispanics and African Americans, and the correlation between overall health and eye health. Additionally, the report provides suggestions for outreach, such as bilingual resources, to encourage regular visits to eyecare professionals.
