Environmental Health: Hurricane Harvey

Resources - General Public 

  • Dia de la Mujer Latina and the Houston Health Department have partnered to offer assistance to those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Rebuilding Houston, Restoring Lives/Reconstruyendo Houston, Restaurando Vidas will provide food, clothing, and assistance with disaster relief applications. Assistance will be offered at the Hiram Clarke Multiservice Center in Houston, TX on September 8, 9:00 am-8:00 pm, and at the Southwest Multiservice Center in Houston, TX on September 9, 9:00 am-8:00 pm.   • HHS/Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ): Surge Toolkit and Facility Checklist - Public Health Emergency Preparedness. This Toolkit is a step-by-step guide to assist staff responsible for management, legal, facility, staffing, security, materials management, and transportation planning for reopened closed ("shuttered") hospitals to expand surge capacity during an emergency. S2S awards up to $120,000 to medical and dental students in their final year of school in return for a commitment to provide primary care services full-time for at least 3 years at an approved NHSC site in an underserved rural, tribal or urban area. This webinar will provide an overview of the genetic basis and the environmental exposures that cause cancer. It will describe the types of cancers which disproportionately affect African immigrants and present scientific findings to demonstrate why prevention and early detection of cancer must be an ultimate goal. Opportunities for Public Comments

  • US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Nutrition Service: Request for comments on the Summer Food Service Program Study. USDA seeks to better understand the facilitators and barriers to the summer meals program, the benefits and challenges for program sponsors, and factors influencing children's participation. Commenters can suggest ways USDA can identify strategies to increase participation in rural summer meals programs. Deadline is October 23, 2017. Learn more.  

@ The Knowledge Center - Recommended Reading

  • Saving Lives in the Stacks, How Libraries are Handling the Opioid Crisis, was published in the latest issue of American Libraries. The article highlights programs developed by both urban and rural public libraries to serve vulnerable populations in their regions. To further discuss this topic, the Public Library Association (PLA) and WebJunction are hosting a town hall meeting to discuss the opioid epidemic and related effects on library services. Representatives from libraries and other community organizations will describe their local efforts and partnerships in addressing this epidemic.
