- Empowered
Communities for a Healthier Nation Initiative – a new competitive
cooperative agreement Funding Opportunity Announcement now open. This is a
program of the Office of Minority Health (OMH) at the United States
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The Empowered Communities
for a Healthier Nation Initiative seeks to reduce significant health
disparities impacting racial and ethnic minorities and/or disadvantaged
populations through implementing evidence based strategies with the
greatest potential for impact. The program is intended to serve residents
in communities disproportionately impacted by the opioid epidemic;
childhood/adolescent obesity; and serious mental illness. Deadline is

 Grant Reviewers Wanted
- HHS/OMH is looking for
Subject Matter Experts to serve as reviewers of applications submitted to its
Empowered Communities for a Healthier Nation Initiative (ECI) competitive grant
program. The ECI is intended to provide support for minority and/or disadvantaged
communities disproportionately impacted by the opioid epidemic,
childhood/adolescent obesity, or serious mental illness. If you are a
professional with a well-documented history as a subject matter expert in the
area(s) of opioid abuse; childhood/adolescent obesity; or serious mental
illness, please register to become a grant reviewer and submit your CV by
visiting the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH) Reviewer Recruitment Module.

- HHS/Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation (OPRE): Family Strengthening Scholars. Supports dissertation research on healthy marriage policy issues. Deadline is July 14, 2017. Learn more.
- HHS/Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA): Rural Health Opioid Program. This program will reduce morbidity and mortality related to opioid overdoses in rural communities through the development of broad community consortiums to prepare individuals with opioid-use disorder to start treatment, implement care coordination practices to organize patient care activities, and support individuals in recovery through the enhancement of behavioral counselling and peer support activities. - HHS/Administration for Community Living (ACL): Innovations in Nutrition Programs and Services - Cooperative Agreement. - HHS/National Institutes of Health (NIH): Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Individual Predoctoral Fellowship to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (Parent F31 - Diversity) Grant. Through this award program, promising predoctoral students will obtain individualized, mentored research training from faculty sponsors while conducting well-defined research projects in scientific health-related fields relevant to the missions of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers. - HHS/Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP): New statistical brief. Patient Characteristics of Opioid-Related Inpatient Stays and Emergency Department Visits Nationally and by State, 2014. According to data from AHRQ's Fast Stats, hospitalizations involving opioid pain relievers and heroin increased 75 percent for women between 2005 and 2014, a jump that significantly outpaced the 55 percent increase among men. - We are pleased to add a new article
from The Journal of the Oklahoma State Medical Association to our online
collection. Implementing Community Baby Showers to Address Infant Mortality,
authored by Timothy Thornberry, Jennifer Han, and Linda Thomas, describes
the implementation of a state-based health promotion program aimed at reducing
infant mortality rates in Oklahoma. Linda Thomas is the Director of the
Oklahoma State Department of Health, Office of Minority Health. The program was
developed with grant support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human
