- Empowered
Communities for a Healthier Nation Initiative – a new competitive
cooperative agreement Funding Opportunity Announcement now open. This is a
program of the Office of Minority Health (OMH) at the United States
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The Empowered Communities
for a Healthier Nation Initiative seeks to reduce significant health
disparities impacting racial and ethnic minorities and/or disadvantaged
populations through implementing evidence-based strategies with the
greatest potential for impact. The program is intended to serve residents
in communities disproportionately impacted by the opioid epidemic; childhood/adolescent
obesity; and serious mental illness. Deadline is August 1, 2017, 5:00 pm

- HHS/Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS): Grants
to Support the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Health
Services Research Grant Program. Applicants must be an accredited

to Support the Hispanic Health Services Research Grant Program. Deadline

- HHS/Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA): Children's Hospitals Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) Payment Program. The purpose of the CHGME Payment Program is to compensate for the disparity in the level of Federal GME funding for freestanding children's teaching hospitals versus other types of teaching hospitals. - HHS/HRSA: Curing Hepatitis C among People of Color Living with HIV. This initiative will support up to two recipients to improve the prevention, care, treatment, and cure of hepatitis C in areas affected by HIV/HCV co-infection among low-income, underinsured, or uninsured racial and ethnic minority populations. - HHS/Centers for Disease Control and prevention (CDC): Laboratory Leadership Service (LLS) Fellowship Program. Through on-the-job service at CDC and other public health laboratories, LLS fellows acquire and apply skills in laboratory quality management, the science of biosafety, and leadership.  - The Office of Minority Health Resource Center (OMHRC)'s Knowledge Center team will be at the American Library Association Annual Chicago Conference and Exhibition, booth #3944, on June 22-27, highlighting their efforts in transforming minority health. A photo booth will be available to feature the great work that other libraries are doing in the community. - HHS/Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Indian Health Service (IHS), and the National Indian Health Board: Recorded event. Federal Tribal Trauma Training Workshop. The Health Subgroup of the White House Council on Native American Affairs developed a Trauma Initiative in response to input from tribal leaders. This initiative builds on the historical and intergenerational element of the National Tribal Behavioral Health Agenda and is intended to increase the cultural awareness of federal staff as they work to support tribal efforts. Annual United States Conference on African Immigrant and Refugee Health
(USCAIH), Advancing the Health of African Immigrants through Research,
Advocacy and Community Engagement. USCAIH 2017 will bring together members
of the community, health researchers, academics, public health workers,
advocates, provider and community organizers to shed light on, enhance and
advance the body of scholarship, programmatic know-how and expertise in the
increasingly complex field of African immigrant and refugee health. October

- Community Preventive Services Task Force: New recommendations. Diabetes Management: Team-Based Care for Patients with Type 2 Diabetes. Evidence
demonstrates that team-based care improves patients' blood glucose (measured
A1c levels), blood pressure, and lipid levels. Interventions also increase the
proportion of patients who reach target blood glucose, blood pressure, and
lipid levels. Learn more.

- HHS/CDC, National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP): Toolkit. Working Together to Manage Diabetes: A Toolkit for Pharmacy, Podiatry, Optometry, and Dentistry (PPOD). This toolkit shows PPOD practitioners how they can work with each other, as well as with all other members of the health care team, such as primary health care providers, physician assistants, nurse educators, and community health workers, to promote better outcomes for people with diabetes. Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) and OMH are pleased to announce the release of a new health
disparities data widget. The widget provides an easy way to find health
disparities data related to the Healthy People 2020 objectives for the Leading
Health Indicators (LHIs). LHIs are critical health issues that when addressed
will help reduce the leading causes of death and preventable illnesses.

- Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations: Webinar. Action August: Using National Health Center Week for Advocacy. National Health Center Week (NHCW) will be held August 13-19, and this webinar will focus around success stories from centers that have used NHCW to advance their advocacy and policy goals. - HHS/CMS: Request for Information. Reducing Regulatory Burdens Imposed by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act & Improving Healthcare Choices to Empower Patients. CMS seeks recommendations and input from the public on how to create a more flexible,
streamlined approach to the regulatory structure of the individual and small
group health insurance markets. This process aims to identify and eliminate or
change regulations that are outdated, unnecessary, or ineffective; impose costs
that exceed benefits; or create inconsistencies that otherwise interfere with

NEHEP is pleased to offer the See Well for a Lifetime Toolkit in Spanish. This new and easy to use kit helps you help others protect their vision en español.
