National Minority Health Month 2017 #Bridge2Health Twitter Town Hall, April 12, 2017, 1:00 pm ET @minorityhealth

Join us for National Minority Health Month #NMHM17 signature event!

The #Bridge2Health Twitter Town Hall, a virtual event, will take place at 1:00 PM EDT on April 12 and will be broadcast and viewable through the OMH Twitter handle, @minorityhealth

During the Twitter Town Hall we will highlight stories from the around the country of community-based efforts to address health disparities and achieve health equity. The event will be moderated by Dr. Yanira Cruz, President and CEO of the National Hispanic Council on Aging. Featured speakers include:

  • American Psychological Association/American Psychological Foundation: Pearson Early Career Grant. Awards funds to an early-career clinician for a scientifically based clinical project in the area of serious mental illness, serious emotional disturbance, incarcerated or homeless individuals, children with serious emotional disturbance, or adults with serious mental illness.   • The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU): 2017 HBCU All-Star Program. This Initiative recognizes undergraduate, graduate, and professional students for their accomplishments in scholarship, leadership, and civic engagement. Deadline is May 12, 2017. Learn more.
  • HHS/NIH, National Cancer Institute (NCI): Cancer Research Training Award Fellowship in Tobacco Cessation and mHealth Resources and Research. The program is currently recruiting a FT fellow to be part of a multidisciplinary team to plan and implement Smokefree.gov activities and research.   • HHS/NIH, NCI: Cancer Research Training Award Fellowship in the Basic Biobehavioral and Psychological Sciences Research Branch (BBPSB). The program invites applications from qualified candidates for a FT post-baccalaureate fellowship position to support the advancement of research in biobehavioral mechanisms and psychological processes to reduce cancer risk and improve outcomes. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. NIH researchers seek volunteers ages 18 to 70 who are free of serious medical conditions. Study to be conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD. Learn more.
  • HHS/NIH, NIMH: A Controlled Trial of Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors Added to Stimulant Medication in Youth with Severe Mood Dysregulation. NIH researchers seek children ages 7-17 with severe irritability. Study to be conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD. Learn more
  • The University of Michigan, in collaboration with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and the NephCure Foundation: Nephrotic Syndrome Study Network (NEPTUNE). Researchers seek volunteers ages 18 or older who have protein in their urine and have been advised by their doctor to have a kidney biopsy to help diagnose kidney disease.   • National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM): New report. A National Strategy for the Elimination of Hepatitis B and C: Phase Two Report. This report, which is sponsored by the HHS Office of Minority Health and others, provides a US strategy for eliminating hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus infection and the disease and mortality caused by these agents as public health threats by 2030. It sets out elimination goals for the nation and a practical set of recommendations to scale up current prevention activities and focuses on five areas: (1) public health information; (2) essential interventions; (3) service delivery; (4) financing elimination; and (5) research. Learn more

  • HHS: New blog post. Addressing Public Health Crises: Suicide and Opioid Addiction are Preventable. One hallmark of public health is life expectancy, and the US just experienced a drop in overall life expectancy for the first time since 1993. This was due in part to increases in two of the nation's most heart-breaking and yet preventable public health issues facing us: the increasing rate of suicide and the increasing misuse of opioid drugs.
