Advancing Latino Health in a Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Manner

J Nadine Gracia

When Maria Schinstock’s father was diagnosed with diabetes, she asked him to move closer to her so she could help him manage his condition and day-to-day activities. He eventually moved closer to Maria, but by that time his diabetes was in an advanced stage.

Taking care of her terminally ill father made her more aware of the lack of information and support patients with chronic illnesses received in her community. This awareness also influenced her work as a promotora de salud, or community health worker.

Read more about Maria’s story and how the HHS Office of Minority Health and partners are supporting promotoras de salud and community health workers, and advancing culturally and linguistically appropriate services on the OMH Blog for Health Equity.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced additional initiatives to reach young adults during Open Enrollment and help them find affordable coverage through HealthCare.gov. Young adults had the highest uninsured rates before the Affordable Care Act and have seen the sharpest drop in uninsured rates since 2010.

Yet millions of young adults remain uninsured, showing that there is more work to do to equip younger Americans with the tools and information they need to access coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace. New strategies, tools and partnerships to reach young people and help them get covered include: new digital platforms, mobile access and targeted outreach campaigns. Learn more about this effort.
