NSF TIP launches Investment Explorer to highlight the impact of its investments across the nation
The TIP Investment Explorer allows users to visualize its investments by geography, key technology area and program
The U.S. National Science Foundation Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships (NSF TIP) announced the launch of the TIP Investment Explorer, featuring a map and award data, to showcase the scale and impact of NSF TIP's investments across the nation and in key technology areas.
The TIP Investment Explorer is an expansion of the successful TIP Investments Pilot launched last year, an ambitious tool that TIP piloted to demonstrate the breadth and depth of TIP's investments across the U.S. The TIP Investment Explorer combines the original components and capabilities of the pilot with new features and use cases, allowing users to view the regions, organizations, programs and researchers funded by TIP.
"Launching the TIP Investment Explorer provides the American public with deeper transparency and insight into the breadth and depth of TIP's investments in key technology areas and U.S. communities," said Erwin Gianchandani, NSF assistant director for TIP. "And because NSF has recognized the need to provide increased opportunities for industry stakeholders, researchers, startups and local organizations to connect and collaborate beyond traditional methods, TIP is opening up our data and information to provide these avenues of connection to further foster innovation and economic growth."
With the new TIP Investment Explorer, users can view interactive connections between lead awards and subawards, summary details by region and investment amounts, and at-a-glance visuals of funding levels. Viewers can also access use cases and one-click options to explore TIP impacts, discover TIP-funded projects, explore a map of investments and search for organizations and researchers funded by TIP. Information in the TIP Investment Explorer is presented on a map and in a list format to allow for various methods of interacting with the data. Data in the visualization is pulled from the public NSF award search and categorized into key technology areas with machine learning.
