On Oct. 4, Stanford University released a list of the top 2% of scientists in various scientific fields. For calendar year 2022, 21 NPS professors were recognized among the world’s top 2% of scientists in 8 out of 22 fields. The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (composite indicator) or a percentile rank of 2% or above in the sub-field.

NPS facilitates second course for Ukrainian Armed Forces
Critical energy infrastructure protection (CEIP) was the subject of a second NPS course for members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, government officials and NATO partners held at the headquarters of the Lithuanian-Polish-Ukrainian (LITPOLUKR) Brigade in Lublin, Poland, Oct. 23-27. NPS faculty members Dr. David Alderson and Dr. Daniel Eisenberg presented best practices for vulnerability and resilience analysis, leading hands-on activities and serious gameplay to demonstrate concepts in action.
Experts gather for Winter AI Summit
Artificial intelligence (AI) experts from throughout the Navy, DOD, academia and industry gathered at NPS, Dec. 4-7, for the latest Naval AI Summit. Sponsored by NWSI, the AI Summit is an important component of the NAVPLAN Implementation Framework, providing a forum for learning about DON/DOD platforms and processes for AI systems, for exchanging experiences and ideas regarding practical AI, and for discussing some of the most influential advancements in AI technology for naval applications.
NSAM Chaplain hosts cocoa, cookie bar
The Office of the NSA Monterey Chaplain recently hosted a free cocoa and cookie bar for the campus, acknowledging the close of another successful year and wishing all a happy holiday.

 Noyes honored for work at IGPO
Lauded as the “heart and soul of the International Graduate Programs Office,” Kathi Noyes was presented with a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol by IGPO Director Dino Pick at her retirement ceremony, highlighting Noyes’ 31 years of exemplary service as an admissions officer for thousands of international students and their families.
 Zhang named as IEEE Fellow
For his design of a direct current circuit breaker capable of supporting electrified aircraft propulsion, Dr. Di Zhang was designated a Fellow of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a rare distinction reserved for a small number of researchers in the field; only a few current and former faculty at NPS have been selected for the honor.
Retirement Ceremony for Capt. William Sherrod
NPS President retired Vice Adm. Ann Rondeau, retired Cmdr. Stew Wennersten, and U.S. Navy Capt. Jason Rimmer, U.S. Naval Academy Director for Leadership Education and Development, will preside over the retirement ceremony of Capt. William Sherrod on Dec. 22, 2023. Sherrod has served NPS in several capacities since July 2021, including Director, President’s Action Group; Deputy Director (Navy) for NWSI; Director, Office of Strategic Initiatives; Assistant Chief of Staff for Aviation Activities; Air Warfare Chair; and Acting Chief of Staff and Commanding Officer, NPS Military Staff Element.

A native of Rushville, Ind., U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Sara Dixon received her B.A. in English from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2010 and was commissioned in the Marine Corps, where she served as a CH-53E pilot prior to becoming a manpower officer at the G-1 Manpower Operations, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, Calif. At NPS, Dixon is studying Manpower Systems Analysis and also serves as co-host of the Trident Room Podcast.

U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Karl Flynn, a native of Geneseo, Ill., received his B.S. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in 2018 and was commissioned as a Marine second lieutenant. He is an infantry officer who completed two Unit Deployment Programs as a platoon commander in the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, and is currently studying Applied Physics and researching unmanned aerial systems swarm defense at NPS. He serves as a co-host of the Trident Room Podcast.

Marco Romani is the new director of NavalX Central Coast TechBridge at NPS. A former Naval Flight Officer who retired from the Navy in 2017 with the rank of captain, Romani has served as a scientific programmer on the predecessor to AEGIS, a nuclear force analyst, and an Action Officer to the Chief of Naval Operations. His operational tours included service as Executive Officer and CSO for Carrier Strike Groups 7 and 11; he also served as liaison to U.S. Pacific Command J-5 and was twice selected as the senior Navy representative to the Republic of China Navy. Romani earned a B.S. in Physics from Penn State University and a M.S. in Applied Physics from The Johns Hopkins University.

As the International Special Programs and Engagement Coordinator for the International Graduate Programs Office, Martha Brumback manages programs that support students’ transitions to and success at NPS. A former English as a Second Language (ESL) specialist who taught in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Kenya, Brumback also served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a cryptologist and Arabic linguist, attaining the rank of sergeant, and was the 1st Radio Battalion’s Command Language Program Manager. She earned her B.A. and M.A. from the University of Texas at Austin.

Seth F. Gibson is a former program manager who supported the Marine Corps Enterprise IT Services, the Defense Manpower Data Center, and the Army Research Facilitation Laboratory. Gibson earned his B.S. in Business from the University of Colorado Boulder, and a M.S. in IT Management from NPS. He was honored for his distinguished service in the U.S. Marine Corps, from which he retired in 2015. He is a member of the Information Sciences Department.

Following her careers with the National Park Service, several local government and private industry positions on the east side of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and 10 years as a special education teacher in public schools, Elizabeth Erdelyi joined NPS to help lead the NPS Extended Campus (NEC) in its mission to provide distance learning opportunities to military and DOD partners.

 Trident Room Podcast marks 50th episode
50 Episodes and Counting!! NPS’ 100 percent student-hosted, student-run Trident Room Podcast reached a milestone this month with the release of its 50th episode. The host team celebrated the accomplishment with a discussion on the evolution of the podcast since its establishment, a review of their favorite episodes, and an outlook on what the future holds for the official voice of NPS students.

DEOCS survey briefed to staff, faculty
On Dec. 12, NPS President retired Vice Adm. Ann Rondeau briefed NPS faculty and staff members on the results of the FY23 Defense Organizational Climate Survey (DEOCS), an annual requirement which provides DOD leaders with important feedback about their current command climate. The brief was conducted in person at Glasgow Hall and online via Zoom. The DEOCS survey report and debrief video will be available on MyNPS at https://nps.edu/group/command-climate-survey.
President’s Suggestion Box relaunched
Additionally, President Rondeau announced the relaunching of the President’s Suggestion Box. NPS faculty and staff members interested in helping the school enhance its processes, workflows, and overall work environment are encouraged to visit https://nps.edu/group/mynps/suggestions to offer their ideas and insights.

ERP migration continues
NPS will continue to be in the blackout period in the migration to Navy ERP until Dec. 23. Non-labor procurement transactions are restricted to mission critical requirements only.
Research on oil production supply chains
Dr. Emily Meierding of the National Security Affairs (NSA) Department is using her sabbatical to conduct research on an underexamined topic: illicit oil production supply chains, their structure and operations, and how they impact strategic competition. The results will lead to the development of a new course in Geoeconomics and enhancements of four other courses for NSA.

- The Energy Academic Group hosted lectures on geothermal energy as an abundant sustainable energy source; the impact of nuclear power on non-proliferation and energy stability; and onshore wind services supply chain management.
- The Naval Warfare Studies Institute hosted its fourth “Innovation in Combat” discussion on commercial space capabilities and applications, including current research that explores the Starlink constellation and its potential uses in future conflicts.

NPS Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Thomas Kelley, recipient of the Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War, and retired Adm. Robert Natter, also a decorated Vietnam War veteran who rose to command the U.S. Seventh Fleet, U.S. Atlantic Fleet and U.S. Fleet Forces Command, were recognized by a standing-room-only audience on the Herrmann Hall quarterdeck during an NPS Hall of Fame induction ceremony on December 1, honoring their significant contributions to the nation and to national security.

 NWPAC Wargame Planning Conference
NPS hosted a successful Northwest Pacific (NWPAC) Wargame planning conference with U.S. Pacific Fleet (PACFLT) and Commander, U.S. Seventh Fleet (C7F) that assembled nearly 100 participants, almost half from Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force, including Rear Adm. Nobuyuki Takenaka, Director General, Operations and Plans Department, MSO.
