Transformation Tool Campaign Countdown
As the end of 2021 approaches and the cut-off date for submitting data for use in the Transformation Tool looms, NGS is working hard to evaluate our progress on the core elements of the NSRS Modernization plan.
We’re also adaptively managing and prioritizing our limited staff time and resources across the many interrelated development efforts while continuing to serve all of our existing users of the current NSRS.
As part of this evaluation, we’re considering exactly when we will be ready to pull the lever and run the first official Reference Epoch Coordinate (REC) adjustments on the GPS data that we have received. As I wrote back in August, GPSonBM is here to stay. Stay tuned for more updates as the GPSonBM priority list and goals continue to evolve.

Recent Progress
The good news is that the volume of data submission has remained strong through the fall surveying season, after this summer’s record-breaking pace. The bad news is that the high volume of submissions has challenged NGS' capacity to do quality control, leading to some delays in processing Shared OPUS Solutions and updates to datasheets from mark recoveries.
I’d like to thank you all for your patience with us during this time as we ramp up our capacity to handle all the data you are sending in. This is an important process for us all because submitting geospatial data to NGS is how the Modernized NSRS will be realized and accessed. On the bright side, these processing delays mean that there is even more data in the pipeline that is not yet reflected in these graphs from the Progress Dashboard!

Partner Highlight - NGS OPUS and Mark Recovery Teams
While the NGS core GPSonBM team is only three people, nearly every other part of NGS plays a crucial role in making the program run as smoothly as it does. The Communications and Outreach Branch staff hosts the monthly webinars and helps to bring these newsletters to life and into your inbox. The Regional Geodetic Advisors play a major role in getting the word out, providing technical consultations, and answering questions from people in their regions.
Today, I’d like to send a special shout-out to the NGS OPUS and Mark Recovery teams, who have borne the brunt of the onslaught of new data that we have drummed up through GPSonBM outreach efforts. We have seen that out in the field a few motivated and engaged people can make a big difference in blanketing an area with GPS observations. It is just the same in the office where the individuals on these teams across NGS have stood up to the challenges this crowd-sourcing effort has thrown at us. I think I can speak for many of our GPSonBM partners across the country in saying thanks to you for keeping the NGS machine rolling. Your work is helping prepare us all to start deriving the benefits of the Modernized NSRS upon its release.
Call to Action: Recover, Observe, Report!
NGS tracks participation in this campaign, but we rely on partner participation to be successful. If you have an accomplishment you want to highlight, email NGS.GPSonBM@noaa.gov.
