NOAA Fisheries Seeks Responses to a Voluntary Internet and Chartplotter Survey

Deadline to Take Survey is June 26, 2026

Please consider responding to GARFO’s voluntary Internet and Chartplotters Survey by June 26, 2026. The link to take the survey has been distributed via an email from Qualtrics, which is a survey tool.

Background

President Trump’s Executive Order 14276, Restoring American Seafood Competitiveness directed NOAA Fisheries to “modernize data collection and analytical practices that will improve the responsiveness of fisheries management to real-time ocean conditions.” NOAA Fisheries has been working with fishermen, technology manufacturers, and other partners to expand the adoption of electronic technologies in U.S. fisheries for over a decade. The recent acceleration of internet service for marine industries strengthens numerous technology programs by supporting the ability to make real-time software updates, improving communication and reporting capabilities, and most importantly, improving safety for the vessel and crew.

We are interested to learn about fishing vessels that operate in the Greater Atlantic Region, whether they have internet service on their vessel and/or use a chartplotter, and what your reasoning is for having it or not. This voluntary survey is intended to help managers understand fishermen’s use of internet and chartplotters while at sea, and to improve our customer service as they operate their businesses.
