The public comment period for Executive Order 14276, Restoring American Seafood Competitiveness, has reopened until December 15. Public comments will help identify specific actions we can take as we launch a bold, coordinated effort to revitalize the U.S. seafood sector. Since 2022, scientists studying Chinook salmon returning to California’s Central Valley rivers have worked with anglers to tag and monitor the returning fish. With California waters closed to most salmon fishing for the last 3 years, the tagging project gave anglers a rare chance to catch salmon—for a good cause.

Southeast
Since 1987, turtle excluder devices have protected sea turtles from getting accidentally caught in trawl nets. NOAA scientists and fishermen are working together to make TED designs even more effective, helping some sea turtle populations to rebound while continuing to provide economic opportunities.

A large, deceased shortfin mako shark washed ashore in Panama City Beach, Florida. NOAA Fisheries biologists responded to the scene to retrieve the shark for a necropsy. Fortunately, a high school football team visiting from Ohio was in the area and helped the biologists transport the heavy shark.

New England/Mid-Atlantic
Tal Petty started farming oysters at his property in Hollywood, Maryland, as a side hobby. In 2013, he left his previous career to farm oysters full-time with his wife Na at the now-300-acre solar-powered Hollywood Oyster Company.
