Proposed Rule to Issue Protective Regulations for the Threatened Oceanic Whitetip Shark Under the Endangered Species Act
Today, NOAA Fisheries announced a proposed rule to issue protective regulations under section 4(d) of the Endangered Species Act for the conservation of the threatened oceanic whitetip shark (Carcharhinus longimanus). The proposed rule would extend all ESA section 9(a)(1) prohibitions to the species, with limited exceptions for scientific research and law enforcement activities.
While oceanic whitetip sharks are prohibited in all Atlantic HMS fisheries, retention of oceanic whitetip sharks is not prohibited in all other non-HMS fisheries, and other forms of take beyond retention are not prohibited.
