NMFS Initiation of Government-to-Government and Government-to-Corporation Tribal Consultation for Action Items at the April 2024 NPFMC Meeting
Dear Tribal Leaders and Tribal Representatives,
The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Alaska Regional Office (AKRO), Sustainable Fisheries Division AKRO (SFD) would like to invite you to consult or engage together prior to the April 2024 North Pacific Fisheries Management Council (NPFMC) Meeting on any Council agenda items that may have tribal implications. The following actions may be of interest to you:
- C1 Chum Salmon Bycatch*
- C3 Area 4 Vessel Caps
- D2 Maximum Retention amount adjustments
- D3 Research priorities – set 5-year priorities
- D4 Sablefish study for IRA funding

In addition, NMFS now offers a regularly scheduled tribal engagement session two weeks prior to Council meeting to discuss topics of tribal interest. All tribal citizens, members and representatives are welcome. Please share your questions and concerns.

* NMFS is providing a second tribal engagement session on the preliminary EIS alternatives document regarding chum salmon bycatch due for release in mid-March. All tribal citizens, members and representatives are welcome. Please attend this special engagement session on chum salmon bycatch to share your questions and concerns.
- March 19th, 1:00-3:00pm (Virtual): Release of DRAFT Preliminary EIS alternatives and chum salmon bycatch document

NMFS staff developed a tribal consultation request form to ensure a timely response to requests for consultations. Please use this online form to request tribal consultation as soon as possible if you have interest in consulting with us on any of the topics listed above.
