LMA3 Weak Rope Implementation Update: Additional Weak Ropes Approved for Use in the Northeast Lobster and Jonah Crab Fishery

  • 5/8 inch Polysteel Weak Rope

  • 5/8 inch Braided Neocorp Rope

The Regional Administrator has approved a new three-strand weak rope that, at 5/8 inch diameter, breaks at an average breaking strength of 1,858 lbs. This large diameter Polysteel three-strand rope may be suitable for use in LMA3 and on other offshore boats that have haulers designed for larger diameter rope. Currently, the rope can be purchased through Brooks Trap Mill in Thomaston, Maine.

New weak rope approved.

Additionally, NOAA Fisheries has tested and approved a 5/8 inch version of a Neocorp braided rope that will be manufactured as a white rope with a black and green tracer for LMA3 weak rope. The rope can be ordered through Ketcham Supply in New Bedford, MA.  Like the very similar 1/2 inch diameter Neocorp braided rope, the rope must be attached to other rope with a double sheet bend to allow for clean breaks

Information on these ropes, as well as all other approved ropes and weak links can be found on our website:
