Effective Through January 11
NOAA Fisheries announces a new voluntary right whale Slow Zone (acoustic trigger). On December 27, 2023, the Gulf of Maine Winter Slocum glider operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center detected the presence of right whales east of Portland, ME. The right whale Slow Zone is in effect through January 11, 2024. Mariners are requested to route around the area or transit through it at 10 knots or less.
As a reminder, three additional Slow Zones are also currently in effect. Locations and effective dates are listed below.
